Have you tried running a virus and spyware scan. Ad-aware by lavasoft is a very good and free spyware scanner that can be downloaded from download.com. On the screen birghtness level I would check the power settings under the control panel, try changing the scheme from laptop to desktop and see if that helps with the screen, I know this is not a desirable fix but it is a start for trouble shooting. You can also take a look at your display settings and advanced display settings by right clicking on the desktop and choosing properties. On the box that appears go to the settings tab and the advanced button in the bottom right of the box. Take a look at the settings make sure things look appropriate for the hardware that you have.
