links in e-mails non-functional

after downloading a microsoft update, i have found that i can no longer click on a link in an e-mail to get to sites; i must right click, use 'copy shortcut' and then paste in the address bar to get there.... similarly, i cannot use some shortcut links on websites, i must copy and paste about 50% of the time as noted above.... any ideas would be greatly appreciated as i think i've tried checking and un-checking everything i could think of.... thanks....

Dell Dimension 4100, IE 6.0, Outlook Express 6.0, cable modem....

JerryBErie,

See if the procedure here restores hyperlinks to proper performance.

JerryBErie,

That can be a symptom of a corrupted Virtual Machine. You can download and install a fresh copy from http://www.virtualmachine.tk/.

i tried that.... i actually had the latest version of virtual machine according to the site; but i redownloaded anyway, and it reset the hyperlink back to the old way where i could not click on an e-mail link.... i redid the steps in your original message to recorrect....

JerryBErie,

Is Internet Explorer set as your default browser (Tools|Internet Options|Programs)?

If so try going to Start|Run, type command and click OK. At the command prompt type CD\ and . At the C:> prompt type CD windows\system and . At the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM> prompt type regsrv32 urlmon.dll and . Press OK to dismiss the successful registration dialog box.
