Linux on external USB drive?

Question

Does anyone know how to install linux on an external usb drive and have it boot up when i plug it into my dell? Thanks in advance.

Here is a utility to make the drive bootable http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/serveroptions/us/download/23839.html     but making a Dell boot from it into an OS is another problem in itself   http://www.ngine.de/index.jsp?pageid=4176   sorry this is for windows, may give some insight though..maybe not. I'm not sure if its just my PC but I cannot seem to download from that hp usb page. I've tried both firefox and internet explorer. Downloading from other sites is no problem.
