load error message

Has anyone ever had this message when they turned os their computer?I  have an xp win 98se system and when this message appeared I could not even using the discs which Dell gave me when the machine was purchased could get even into safe mode. The tech said that I had to scrap win98se and install win xp which I did and I am ok.but this seemed drastic since I never had a problem before .Anyone know what could have caused such a problem.Thanking all in advance.Frank.

It is very difficult to answer your question without knowing the full and exact text of the error message.

I had a problem trying to run scandisk and defrag which would only run is safe mode so i went to the forum and followed the ctrl alt del on all but the two needed programs and scandisk seemed to then work in windows that day. The next day I couldnt get on to the computer at all .I dont think it was related  to  what I did but all I knew was that I got the message load error press any key to reboot but nothing worked including using all the disks that came  with the machine. Its a xpb had win 98se and i have had it for years with very little problem as I usually read Dennys Dunham through the years. He usually solves all problems.I was  told to and had winxp home installed but wondered what caused win98se to stop. Thanks Frank
