Open command prompt as administrator

type or copy/paste the following command

powercfg -h on

hit enter

reboot, see if it works.

no, i'm not using that button.
I use the arrow that is next to the lock button, and then select hibernate.

Did it, but that button puts it to sleep, not hibernate.

According to this person Sleep and Hibernate are the same in Vista

"Windows Vista combines standby and hibernate into a single power-saving state called sleep"

mombodog,
This article has a pretty good explanation. It also explains how to determine whether or not your computer supports hibernation.

One last attempt, there are keyboard shortcuts for sleep and hibernation.

Flag then U  then H    for hibernation

Flag  then U then  S   for Sleep.

pressing these keys in sequence (not at the same time) should activate the desired action.

Video drivers play a big role in sleep and hibernation, so you might see if a Video driver update helps things.

Thank both of you for the article but, hibernation exists in Vista, since it did work for me once(and it still works in my friend's laptop) and they are both different hibernation and sleep.
As for the second article, that could be useful when you don't have the hibernation option at all, but i do have the option and the button, so i think the problem is somewhere else.

I'm starting to think that it has to do with some kind of Vista upgrades, but i'm not sure.
I'm still with the problem..
