Log ON

I have two computers that both use Windows XP,  My Dell always asks for "User Logon" everytime I return after shutting it down in "standby" mode.  Since I am the only person that ever uses this computer I find it a pain.  I tried to change it to no avail.  How or what do I do to restart my computer without having to log on.  Claudia

To by pass the welcome screen and boot direct to the desktop, click start, run, type 'control userpasswords2' (without the ''), click OK. In the window that opens, on the Users tab, clear the 'Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer' check box, click OK. In the Automatically log on dialog box that appears, type the user name and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you start your computer.

You can also download and install the control userpasswords2 applet in control panel from item 1 on the right at

clang1938,

You must not have typed it correctly in the Run box, copy and paste this in the Run box: control userpasswords2

It should work for you, I've never heard of it not working.

I tried your suggestion but it said "no file found".  I tried it without the 2 and still it could not find the file. I used "Search" but still came up empty.  I am not sure if the log in prompt is a Windows XP issue or something that Dell does.  As for Kelly's corner it came up with over 300 fixes but none that said userpassword2 applet.  I would love to have the Windows Desktop screen come up rather than that prompt for my password.    Claudia

Still didn't work.....I even tried the search for "controluserpasswords2" and my computer can not find the file searching all files and folders with and without the 2 at the end.  Hmmmmmm wonder why that is?

clang1938,

The problem with both sets of instructions is that you are being confused by spacing, with a line feed in the middle of the command. See if this helps:

1. Go to Start|Run
2. Enter control userpasswords2 (note the space after "control")
3. Click OK
4. Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer"
5. Click "Apply"
6. Enter your user name and password as the defaults on the way out

Eureka! I found it!  That was my problem.....I was not putting a space after 'control'.  Thank you all so much.  It did the trick!  Claudia
