In the Run box type: sfc  /scannow  with your windows cd in the drive. System File Checker with the scannow option will replace missing files. Note the space after the sfc. If that doesn't work, you can add fonts by opening the Fonts folder in Control Panel and install from the XP cd. Look up Install Fonts in Windows Help.

doane2,

If System File Checker, as Mary G recommended, does not replace the file you can replace it by doing the following.

Create a folder into which the expanded font will be stored (called Font for the purpose of this example), then go to Start|Run, type cmd and click OK. When the command prompt appears enter the following (substituting the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive for X):
expand X:\i386\marlett.tt_ C:\Font\marlett.ttf then click . You should see a message that the file has been successfully expanded.

Now go to C:\Windows\Fonts and when the folder is open go to File|Install New Font and browse to the font file in the Font folder.

Denny:

That did the trick! I thought I remembered that right from the early windows... expand command is still used, even in WinXP.  I wasn't aware of how to get to the command line though, thanks for your help.

I copied the marlett.tt_ to a folder on my c: drive, went to the command line, expanded the file there with no problem.

I then installed the expanded new marlett.ttf file into the windows registry and folder using the font application in control panel. Am back in business.

Thanks for your help!

Mary:

The system file checker took about 5 minutes and didn't do anything, I even ran it twice.

You can't install the fonts on the windows cd because they are in a compressed format, ie: marlett.ttf is marlett.tt_ on the cd.

I just wanted to thank Mary and Denny again for the quick responses and help.

I spent several hours at MS and never did get an answer.

Also, I've had a problem of freeze ups everytime I try to run the XP diskcleanup... again, I couldn't find an answer at MS, but I did a search here and in 1 minute I had instructions on how to remove the compressed folder notation in the registry that was causing the problem, and it's now fixed!  My only comment on this instruction is that you should have included how to back up the folder keys being deleted in the registry, to be on the safe side, instead of only having a warning and disclamer, but the info was very clear.

Thank you Dell, and thank you both again!
