Mcaffee

New dell has Mcaffee installed which I don't want or need. I am okay with XP firewall and my DSL provider supplies the spam, virus, etc.

How can I at least stop from starting? Add/remove programs won't let me remove because "all modules not already removed".

Ran into this a few weeks ago, McAfee is forcing you to complete the registration process before you can remove the product from the PC, nasty company in my opinion. You can do a start run and type  msconfig   hit ok and go to the startup tab and uncheck  anything you do not want to start. Reboot and tick the don't show me this again bow when it pops up.

Any chance that every time I rebooted, incoming server in outlook express would change to 127.?.?.?(?) I kept correcting to the appropriate "pop". Referring to Mcaffee starting and then I would "disable".

My E510 had McAfee Internet Security preinstalled, among other junk. It REALLY slowed down my computer. Uninstalling the program left hundreds, if not thousands of registry entries. Computer still didn't act quite right.

It's quite tedious, but I found formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows XP (assuming you have the disc) was the best solution. That way all the junk Dell preinstalls is gone, including McAfee. Everything runs much better now.

Two more discoveries:

1. Macafee services are also listed under the services tab as well as the startup tab (see above).

2. In add remove/programs (control panel)is listed Mcaffee security center and Mcaffee uninstaller. Logically one would think not to remove the installer first but if you do, it gives you option to remove firewall, virus, and spam killer. If you leave all three checked and continue, it does delete all three and itself.

Thanks to mombodog for pointing me in the right direction, I was able to remove without registering.
