ME to XP using Upgrade Version

I'm planning to upgrade my XPS B933 from ME to XP using the XP upgrade version ($99.00).  Does the original Dell disk that came with my system labeled "Operating System For the Reinstallation of Windows Me" qualify and work as a previous version of a Windows CD?  Second question, even though the Dell upgrade advisor does not recommend that I upgrade from ME to XP it sounds as if other people have still done it.  Has anyone else upgraded a Dimension XPS B933 (Bought in Sept 2000) or similar system to Windows XP?  If so, what do I need to look out for?   Thanks.

bjake,

Your ME Reinstallation CD will work fine. For additional information see this.

Denny or anyone.  Should I disconnect my external components before I start the upgrade  (printer, scanner, camera etc...) and then reconnect / reinstall  them one at a time after the upgrade has completed?  Or should I just leave them attached through the whole process.   Paul Thurrott's article doesn't really address this, unless I missed it.  Thanks again.  (I'll probably be bugging you alot as I investigate the process).

bjake,

The standard advice is to disconnect everything external except keyboard, mouse, and monitor before installing XP.

Well, hope I wasn't a little overexuberant in my post. However, when you've been talking about popping for a new system with your wife and suddenly discover that the current one is alive and kicking, well, it's a bit of unexpected joy.

I wanted to hit on a point or two that you touched on.

As far as "qualifying media", Thurrott's website is pretty clear that the reinstall ME CD shipped with your Dell system is unlikely to qualify. I don't quite grasp why Dell wouldn't ship a standard OEM ME CD, but that's another issue.

Bottom line, you may be in for a problem here.

Note also that he strongly advises a clean install. It's obviously not necessary, but I strongly suspect that it was key to the fine performance I'm now seeing.

Thanks for the information Harry.  I'm getting braver!!  I've got my taxes filed and FAFSA forms filled out and backed up, so I'm about ready to go for it.   Concerning your second post I'm still hoping the ME Reinstallation Disk works, since I already bought the $99.00 upgrade copy of XP Home.  If it doesn't, well... I guess Billy G just got another $99 bucks off of me?  (Plus another $199).

Thanks again,
