Media Center Extender s/w

Purchased a Linksys Wireless Media Center Extender with my new XPS 600 (product WMCE54AG).

Worked reasonably well but required frequent powerdowns to cure hangs. Went to Linksys WEB site and downloaded a s/w upgrade from version 1.0 to 1.01 (came in the form of an executeable "Linksysv101.exe").

Installation of upgrade apparently went well. First Linksys s/w on my media center PC was upgraded and then the media center extender accepted its part of the upgrade.

Unfortunately now when I start the extender I get the Linksys splash screen quickly followed by a diagram of the extender with an arrow pointing to what appears to be a manual. The number "2" in large print shows on the screen and the sequence "1.1709.0.2" appears on the lower right. The thing seems completely brain dead and won't respond to any commands from my remote in addition to making no attempt to link to my media center PC.

My research seems to indicate that error code 2 indicates that "The Media Center Extender software is either damaged or missing and must be restored".

Any ideas on how to do this? I've already wasted a couple of hours trying to make use of DELL telephone support but just get passed from person to person until I'm finally on a queue which remains unanswered forever.

Spent time w. Linksys Tech. Support and Extender is definitely DOA.

The Lesson - *** Don't try to upgrade Extender microcode ***

DELL won't support this device in any way regardless of the fact that you innocently buy it as part of a large Media Center PC and expect it to be covered by your DELL Warranty. DELL says you are on your own and must deal yourself with the manufacturer Linksys.

Here's another gotcha: I ordered a **system** consisting of a DELL XPS600 with MS XP Media Center Edition 2005 O/S including the Linksys Wireless Media Center Edition Extender. The Linksys Extender arrived within two days of my order but the main system itself took over a month to arrive.

This meant that the Linksys **one month** no questions asked replacement warranty had expired before I could possibly make use of it. DELL's answer - tough luck pal.

This is my third (and last!) DELL. In the past I've recommended buying DELL to all friends in large part because of their once solid customer support.
