Media Center Video Issues

I don't know what codecs to install, it always uses the Nero 7 video codecs but they don't work, they help the background sound of the DVD, but they don't up the volume on the voices, is there a free codec I can install to allow this to work, this also happens in my Desktop PC, one final thing, when I do install this codec, where do I set the default codec so I can change it.

Computer Make:

Dell Inspiron 6000

2 GB RAM

Windows SP3

9 Legend

Sorry, I forgot, I was in a rush, ok, I installed the program, but how do I set it as the default encoder, I check the settings of Media Center, but it is still Nero.
