media player running really slow.

just recieved my new dimension 9600 2.3 processor and 2gig ram,

not really happy with it to be honest .

for some reason, it just freezes up for no apparent reason for about half a min,
does this while trying to reinstall windows, so not sure what that could be.

media player seems to take about 30 seconds to open an mp3 file, and takes the same ammout of time to skip to the next track in the play list, it done it pretty much straight away on my old PC, which was about 5 years old.

half of my automatic updates status is failed, not sure why?, ive tried uninstalling them and reinstalling them , but it still keeps telling me they have failed,

Roxy crashes every time i try to burn a CD, or DVD, but nero works fine, so i am going to uninstall roxy,

media centre keeps showing me a message every 30 seconds, telling me that its crashed, and is goign to close, even though its not open,

im getting a screen that i cannot close pop up every time i start windows telling me the program cannot display the web page, the title of the window, is TOOLBAR EULA, and i cannot get it to close,

a certain bit torrent program, when launched, would block every other application from accessing the internet, until i closed it, then everything else worked fine,
uninstalling mcaffee seems to  have done the trick there. (touch wood)

when i open control panel, i see the window in the taskbar, but not on my desktop, until i right click it, and maximise the window, then it takes up the full screen.

do you think it could be that my operating system is corrupt and needs re-installing ? ive only had it a few days, and already, its a nightmare doing anything, giving me more problems than any other PC i have owned in the past.

it just seems that everything i try to do on this PC, is a head ache, and i am seriously considering downgrading to windows XP, as i know that works properly,

if anyone could give me some advice, or some help to overcome these problems, i would be much appreciated.

thanks
Warren

You have 21 days from date of invoice to return the PC for a full refund or exchange for a New one, I suggest you use this time wisely. After the 21 day grace period, you are stuck with possibly defective equipment.

For the Media Player 11 problem try following these steps:1.Control Panel 2. Hardware And Sound 3.Sound 4.Click on your Sound Device then properties 5. Speakers/Headphones Properties windows pops up click on the Enhancements tab 6. Check the disable all enhancements box 7.Click ok,ok. And that should solve your sound problems

cheers mate, i could kiss you :)

ive been scratching my head and swearing about that one, but you seemed to have sorted out my media player problem,

as regards to the random freezes, ive seen a thread that says if i swap the SATA cables over, this will fix it.

now i have another problem that i have noticed,
when i lock my computer, and come back to it a few hours later, i can hear the computer wirring, the light is on the front, the screen is off, and it doesnt seem to respond to anything apart from holding the power button down for ages, which then turns it off (without shutting down)

any idea's ?

Go to Dell's drivers and downloads page for your particular machine. It doesn't really matter whether you select Vista or XP as your operating system (BIOS is the same for either OS). Click on the BIOS update and you will get another screen with the download AND instructions on how to install it. It's really pretty painless.

As for the ATI drivers, you may be OK. This seems to be more of an NVidia driver problem.

First, make sure that you have the latest BIOS version. If your display adapter is an NVidia model, get the latest driver from the NVidia site - not the Dell site. I have a 9200 and had exactly the same problems, but upgrading the BIOS and installing the NVidia driver solved the problem. Now the computer sleeps and wakes up in a matter of seconds. Let us know if this works for you.

On the Dell support page, select Dimension (under support by product). Then, in the next xcreen, select XPS/Dimension in the product type dropdown, and then in the Product model select 410/9200. That will get you to the next page where you can selec drivers and downloads.

You might want to contact Dell regarding your service tag bringing up the optiplex options (or was this maybe just a one time glitch?)

Is your own account not an administrator account?

ok - many apoligies, it was me being thick,

i had to right click, the exe file, and select run as administrator.

worked a treat.

now there isnt much wrong with my computer (touch wood) , and i am starting to feel rather pleased with it :)

many thanks guys :)

now one more prob, in my automatic updates, it has a few that say they have failed,

i have tried uninstalling them, and reinstalling them, but there still appearing as failed, but there is no error message appearing when they are re-installed,
