Memory and Hard Drive TRANSPLANT

Good Day All!!!

My request for information I hope is simple.

We replaced a defunct "Toshiba INFINA 2000" with a "DELL Dim. 4400".

When recycling the Toshiba we retained the add-on Memory cards and Hard Drive.

Is there the the possibility of implimenting this memory and drive into our 4400???

Our OS is XP home and we presently have 256 in Mem.

Thanks for consedering!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Without knowing the specifics, there is always hope.

There have been steady changes in processor, chipset, and memory products every few years that are not backwards compatible. I searched to see if the RAM specifications are the same for both models.

My search of the Toshiba Support, Crucial Memory, and Kahlon Memory sites listed no match for INFINA 2000, nor for INFINIA 2000. Could this be a Toshiba EQUIUM 2000?

The Dell Support site lists the memory specification for your Dimension 4400 as DDR PC2100, SDRAM (non-ECC), and that there are a total of two slots available for memory cards, and each card is available in 128, 256, or 512MB. If you have two cards of 128MB installed currently, you would need to replace one or both with cards of larger capacity. If you have one card of 256MB currently installed, you can add one more without replacement.

The Dimension 4400 series is based on an Intel P4 processor with an Intel 845 DDR memory support chipset. The memory from your Toshiba is not likely to be compatible unless it has similar specifications, which are unlikely if it is more than a few years old. If it is an Equium 2000, the processor, chipset, and memory specifications do not match.

Hard drives are another matter. Newer systems will normally accomodate older (within reason) hard drives without much problem. It may be recommended to verify the installation of the old drive does not limit the speed of any other drives on the same IDE channel when installed in the Dell. As long as the old drive remains reliable, placing it on a separate IDE channel from your main drive should be fine, and may be recommended even if the second drive is new.
