Memory Expansion

Question

Dell Dimension 2400  is running with 256mb RAM. I am going to add 1GB of RAM. Does it matter if I leave the 256mb in slot1 and add the 1GB in slot2, or should I move the 256mb to slot2 and add the 1gb to slot1 ?

According to the Dell manual you can't use a 1GB memory module - 512MB is the largest size.

Here is the specs from the manual:

RATS ! I hope that isn't true... According to dell, the max RAM is 2GB and they sell a 1GB strip. ?

Did Dell say why you must order two ? I only ordered one and understood that it would be compatible with existing memory already installed .

I hope you're right, and not the other poster! I just ordered and received more RAM for my Dimension 2400. I first used the Dell service tag to see what Dell had to offer for my system, and it showed the 1 GB Memory Module. Just to be on the safe side, I called Dell, and they confirmed that this is what my system would hold, saying that I needed to order 2 of the modules not just the one. I just received them yesterday, and am getting ready to install them myself, which is how I happened upon this post. I was looking for info on how to install them.

If all goes as Dell said it should, I will have the 2 GB upgrade shortly :)

It could be a typo, either way - either the 2GB is correct and it really can use 1GB modules or the 2GB is incorrect which would go along with the other listed spec's.

Would appreciate if you would keep us up to date on the out come. Just up graded my 2400 to 1 GB of ram. Advised that was max---512Mb in slot 1 & 2.

Well, I'm all upgraded and everything went very smoothly :) Earlier, I said Dell told me I needed 2 of the 1GB modules, so lemme back up a minute on that. Dell didn't tell me I "had" to order 2 of them, they just suggested it after I explained why I ran out of RAM so quickly (I work on pictures a whole lot and always have to save & reboot several times before I get thru). When I 1st got my computer, I opted for less storage but faster performance, which is what I still wanted, so they just suggested ordering 2 of the 1GB. After installing both modules last night, my machine rebooted right back up, BUT, it asked me if I wanted to enter setup before starting Windows. Since I had no clue whether I should or not, I went ahead and entered setup anyway so I could look & see if it showed the upgrade, and it did. I then exited setup and everything booted up just like it should. I worked on pics for about 2 hrs afterwards and I was still running as fast when I finished as I was when I started :) I dunno what will happen with those of you who opt for the 1GB, but I have to say I am extremely happy with my upgrade. I would like to add also, I am no techie, by any means. Although I had read up on how to install the RAM, I still had no clue what I was doing, but it was very easy and took less than a couple of minutes. I did however take the time to vacuum out everything before putting it back together. After 4+ years, I can't believe the thing was even still working with all the stuff that had accumulated inside my system :emotion-7:

Another RAM Upgrade Success. I installed a 1GB Memory Strip in Slot #2 and left the Original 256MB in slot #1 in the Dell Dimension 2400. The MAX is 2GB but I opted for 1GB as the owner is a little Frugal, and balked at the additional cost of the 2nd strip. Cripes around $50 including shipping & Tax !  At any rate, this is a small business computer used in a resturant/bar environment, and only used for Quickbooks, Internet Access, and running Norton 360 Security Suite. 1GB is sufficient for their needs. Would have responded sooner, but just received the RAM yesterday.   (EOS)....End Of Story !
