Since you have both version of the .NET Framework installed, you need to install both, see also the recent thread on that topic right below.

P.S.: I think the endless litany of useless and irrelevant details aboput your fine computer in your signature is a bloody nuisance, needlessly wasting screen space. Just my opinion, of course.

Sort of like most of your replies on the board Dietmar.  Touche'.

1) How do you know I have both versions of the .NET Framework installed?

Because you have been offered both service packs. Check in your "Add/Remove Software", you will see that you have both versions installed. Which is perfectly fine by the way, although I have found no case where an application has complained about wanting version 1.0, while I have only 1.1 installed. YMMV, of course.

2) The relevance of the details of my "fine" computer is relative to the reader/post/forum.

Hardly...

3) My deepest and most sincere apologies for having commited such an abhorrent act.

That's allright. I just wanted to let you know how deeply it troubles me.

I wasn't offered either service pack by Windows update (post SP2 update), but found the download pages after reading various forums about them.

The v1.1 service pack installed OK. The v1.0 service pack would not install, message to the effect not compatible with your sofrtware.

In C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework

I have folders labeled v.1.0. 3705 and v1.1.4322

I assumed that meant I had both V 1.0 and V 1.1 installed (I know I have the latter as I installed it some time ago, thought the former came with Dell XP SP1 OEM that has a dotnetfix folder on it). But only v 1.1 appears in add/remove.

Any advice?

This sounds like you only have 1.1 installed. You should definitely see both in add/remove programs otherwise. Why WU did not offer the SP to you I don't know, but I would chalk it up to a glitch of the MS website, unless you see that kind of thing (not being offered updates that others see) happen more often. I trust you checked your event viewer to see if the upgrade went fine. There should only be one warning about IIS not being installed, which you can ignore (unless, of course, you do have IIS installed).

ms .net framework 1.1 is available if you use "custom install" at the windows updates website, under "optional software.." i really do not like the new design of the windows updates website..

I have not been offered both service packs,

Sorry, I missed that. In that case, either check what you have and then download the appropriate service pack, or go to Windows Update and let Microsoft tell you what you need...

Dietmar,

Thanks. I hadn't looked, but doing so now, all seems fine. As you say, just one warning about IIS, otherwise a whole series of info events, the last three of which are 'Product Microsoft .NET framework 1.1 update (CLSID No) installed successfully' and 'configuration completed successfully' followed by 'restart initiated to complete configuration'.

I take it I don't need v 1.0 (no software that I have has asked for it, several have needed v1.1 to install).

While we're on the subject of .NET framework, when I open .NET configuration 1.1 (in administrative tools on my PC), click on applications click on fix an application, several (most) of the entries there relate to software that I uninstalled some time ago, specifically Dell support and alert related. Other entries refer to .tmp files long ago deleted from my temp folder. All of these point to now no longer existing paths and files. None of the redundant applications/files/paths appear anywhere in the registry.

There does not seem to be a way of removing those items from the .NET framework applications cache, that I can find (clicking fix does nothing apparent). Other entries refer to software that I have installed and still have, such as Lookout addin for MS Outlook and the new ATI Control center, so those I obviously want to keep. It just bugs me that I can't remove those redundant entries, although I don't suppose they do any harm as such.

Any views on that?

PS Apologies for inadvertently posting out of sequence.

-Because you have been offered both service packs.

I have not been offered both service packs, the link I posted is the Microsoft website for .NET Framework, and it actually offers 3 packs, two for XP (the ones I mentioned) and a 3rd one I think for NT or 2003.

-That's allright. I just wanted to let you know how deeply it troubles me

Sorry, it was not my intention.

Dietmar,

In case you miss it, I posted a further question, but accidentally did so out of sequence; it's a few posts above this one.

By the way, I just checked the "Add or Remove Programs" from the Control Panel and I have two listings for Microsoft .NET Framework, v1.0.3705 and v.1.1

Anyways, what is really .NET Framework for? From what I read it's a platform for developing and running utilities, right?

Yes, I know Windows Update will automatically detect my needs, I just wanted to download the packs as standalone to keep them for any future reinstallation need, so I am unsure which is the one I should keep in my downloads files.
