Microsoft refusing to support windows vista with updates
HI,
I have been getting the BSOD after reinstalling windows vista premium on my vostro 1500 laptop. It installs fine, but when I apply windows update, after the reboot, I get the BSOD. Ive reinstalled vista 5 times and still this happens after I do the updates. It even happened when I applied updates that came out up until december of 2007.
Dell tells me that since vista installs fine, that they dont support the windows update and that I have to call their fee based support. Arent they supposed to support the laptop using vista with the updates? The computer is completely unusable after applying windows update after a fresh reinstallation. Im confused why they refuse to offer any support
Are they supposed to or do I have to resort to the fee based support?
thanks,
Tom

I don't think Dell supports the OS at all unless you pay.
That said, if you're getting BSODs on a clean install, consider testing the hardware, specifically the ram and HD. A quick way to do this is to press F12 at the Dell screen and select diagnostics.
edit: alternatively, do a clean install of vista and install the manual SP1 update. Microsoft provides free support for the SP1 installation.

I am planning to reinstall Vista and Sp1 in the near future. I have gotten conflicting information about installing KB935509 and KB937287 before installing SP1.
I contacted MS SP1 Support and asked the same question about reinstall Vista/SP1. Their response was that if I already have SP1 burned to CD, I could reinstall Vista and then immediately run the SP1 install. After that I would go on line to get the other MS updates.
It was my understanding that KB935509 and KB937287 were only necessary if I wanted to do the SP1 install via Windows Update, instead of the downloaded version of SP1.
Can anyone verify this, one way or the other, before I get started?
Thanks

I agree with them. If the SP needs something installed previously (which I don't think it does), it will prompt you. I have a hunch (but am again not certain) that you will have more restarts as I'm guessing those updates will be installed seperately when you attempt to install SP1.
I can't verify though ... that's just based on my previous experiance with MS service packs.

Basically saying the same thing below, you must have these updates installed before SP1 will be available for download through Windows Updates.
"You can select not to install an offered update by un-checking the item from the Windows Update list and agreeing to hide the update. Microsoft does not recommend doing this. Specifically, Windows Vista SP1 will not be offered to users who hide one of the following updates:

Yes. It is clear that one can not get SP1 via Windows Update without first install the above mentioned updates.
But my point (question) is that if I already have SP1 burned to a CD, I understand that I can immediately run the SP1 install (from the burned CD) after reinstalling Vista without having to preinstall KB 935509, KB 937287 and KB 938371.
MS SP1 support said that was the correct way to reinstall Vista w/SP1. I just wanted someone to confirm that they have, indeed, done it that way.
Thanks

The articles are pretty clear it is a prerequisite to install those 2-3 updates before SP1 is installed, using windows updates or not. You can try it without them but I don't guarantee the results.
"The following updates must be installed before Windows Update can offer SP1."
There is a reason for this, it is not arbitrary that this is a must. Microsoft can control you from making a mistake when using Windows Update, but not when you manually install the update. Its not just a Windows Update requirement that these updates be installed prior to SP1, but for any installment of SP1, but it does require you to read between the lines.
Good Luck!

It's not a problem to just install the SP. The updates in question are included. I can only guess that windows update does them seperately to spread out the necessary system restarts. From KB938371:
Two or three additional software updates are required before you install Windows Vista SP1. The software updates that are required depend on the version of Windows Vista that you want to upgrade. Prerequisite update 935509 that is listed in this article only applies to Windows Vista Enterprise and to Windows Vista Ultimate. The other prerequisite updates that are listed in this article apply to all versions of Windows Vista.
Before Windows Vista SP1 is released, these prerequisite updates will be delivered to most users through Windows Update as part of regularly scheduled monthly updates. These updates will be installed together with other updates that will require that you restart the computer. Therefore, an additional restart will not be required. This delivery method will help simplify installation of the required updates.
If you decide to install Windows Vista SP1 by using the stand-alone installer instead of by using Windows Update, you will not have to install the prerequisite updates separately. The prerequisite updates will be installed by the stand-alone installer if they are necessary. The following three updates are required before you install Windows Vista SP1. However, these updates are also recommended if you do not intend to install Windows Vista SP1. These updates help improve reliability and performance when you install future individual updates from Microsoft:
