Microsoft SP2
I presently have McFee Virus Scan, McAfee Spam Killer and a free ATT Webroot Spy Sweeper installed on my Windows XP Dimension 8250. Must I REMOVE these programs before downloading SP2. Since SP2 has virus protection and anti spam capability do I even need the McAffe programs. Does Microsoft charge for a yearly subscription to SP2. If not it pays to go with Microsoft doesn't it.

SP2 does not have anti spam capability (which would be related to emails, presumably what your McAfee spam killer refers to). SP2 does have quite a good popup blocker in IE.
SP2 does not have antivirus software, so you must keep your McAfee anti virus software (and pay them to keep your virus definitions up to date).
There is no need for you to uninstall Spy Sweeper either. I'm not familiar with that software, personally, to guard against spyware and other malware, I use Spybot S&D, Spywareblaster and Adaware, all free programs with free updates. These are also the ones most often recommended, for examople on the virus removal forum.
http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/compsafetyonline.html by forum guru ChrisRLG has the links to those. They all work well with XP SP2.

I downloaded sp-2 twice now with both my AVG anti-virus, and spy sweeper on without problems. No microsoft does not charge for sp-2 and you can obtain a cd for free and have it on hand in case you have to re-install windows later.

Hi
Wondering why it shows SP2 not available for download today?
Do I have to download this SP2? I have been reading that it is a lot of trouble.
Thanks

I also heard that downloading SP2 was done incrementally by Microsoft over a period of time. So I just ordered the free SP 2 CD (free shipping) from Microsoft. You should use the free CD URL mentioned in the reply to my original message from UNHAPPY 45.
Good luck

I installed SP2 a few days ago. It appears that SP2 does have anti Spam capability. The information bar is telling me for example that in my E-Mail it is blocking photos unless I authorize that the photos are to be forwarded.
Thought that you would be interested as your original message said that SP2 does not have this feature.

I am on a dell demensions 8200 and when installing sp2 i wound up with an atapi error in event viewer. After calling dell tech support it was determined I had a faulty cd rom drive (which dell just replaced). The tech also told me to uninstall sp2 and wait for a revised version that would be coming out in late Sept to fix a whole lot of problems dell users where having.
I also had a client with the same problem and after calling dell they told us the exact same thing- to uninstall sp2 and wait for the newer version.
I went on a MS newsgroup and told them what Dell told me and they said there was no newerer version coming out.
I really would like Dell to clarify this because I will not reinstall sp2 if there is in fact a newer version coming out. So????

I am delighted with SP2 since installing it a week ago. My event viewer shows errors such as POLICY CH, USER ENV and APPLICATION HANG. Also category shows 101, 1002 and 615 respectively. I don't know what this means or how important these are. I am attempting to investigate. But everything is running fine with no problems. I do NOT trust DELL support if it originates in INDIA as they have given me incorrect info and guidance in the past. I would not have uninstalled SP2. Did you notice operational problems with SP2 installed and were the problems corrected when you removed SP2.
There must be a large Misrosoft population with Dell computers using SP2.

You should refer to MICROSOFT KNOWLEDGE BASE ARTICLE 168483 on their web site. It would appear that in a Windows NT environment with an ATAPI drve you could see this error. Again I do not see unistalling SP2 as I understand that SP2 main thrust is security. Are you in an NT environment?
