Microsoft update stuck in loop

Hello and thank you for reading this I recently reinstalled xp on my computer to fix a driver error. I have reinstalled xp correctly with the driver in the right order. When i first attempted to download updates WINDOWS update worked just fine. I was able to retrieve my updates without any problems. I then installed ms office and switched over to Microsoft update and now when the screen that says checking for the latest updates for your computer just stays up. The green bar will also continue to go across for almost a half an hour (that is when i just quit the update). My anti-virus is kasperky internet security 6. Your help would be great.
