Make sure Word is closed and do a Search (include Hidden and System files) for normal.dot. Rename all you find to anormal.dot. Then open Word by using Start, All Programs, .... Do not click on an existing document. Then Tools, Options, Security and set it to Very High then OK. Then Tools, Options, Save, and click on Prompt to Save Normal template then OK. Close Word. It will ask you if you want to save the normal template. Tell it Yes this time and NO anytime in the future unless you have made changes to the defaults.
If that doesn't work we can replace the runtime library but I think it may be a macro virus trying to run.
I'm having trouble with the Microsoft runtime Library errror again. I've tried what you suggested and it seemed to work for a while but now my computer's at it again. I tried your suggestion to see if it would work, but this time my search doesn't come up with any normal.dot files. Could you please help me once again?
normal.dot files are hidden or system files so you have to tell XP that you want to see them. Word will make a new one when the old ones are removed so there should definitely be one somewhere.
Start, Search, For Files or Folders, then under More Advanced Options, check the top three boxes then search for normal.dot.
If that doesn't help let's look at the exact error message:
Check the Event logs for errors:
Start, Run, eventvwr.msc, OK then select Application. Look for red marked files that have a time stamp about the time of the slowdown. Open the event then click on the bottom of the three buttons to copy the text. Move to a reply and Edit, Paste. Repeat for any other different errors that happened during the last slowdown period or last reboot. Please don't go back to the beginning of time and no events from a Safe Mode boot. Repeat for System. If your PC speaks something other than English don't translate it unless it doesn't use the Latin alphabet and then please include the timestamps.
If you doubleclick on an Event it should open up and there will be three buttons in the upper right. An up arrow, a down arrow and then the one with a pictures of two sheets of paper. That's the copy button.
You just moved to a Reply when you posted your last question. Open an event, click on the copy text button, then just open a forum reply. To Edit paste the text that you copied you click on Edit up on the top left of the IE toolbar then on Paste. Repeat until you get 5 or 6 of them then Submit.

Don't see any Word errors but perhaps we can fix some of the others:
Start, (Settings,) Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and look for Macromedia or Adobe Flash Player or Shockwave and Uninstall all you find then if you must use them download the latest version from Adobe.
We actually bought the McAfee software last year and my son informed me a couple days ago that he had installed an update that was available to us. What should I do?
