I went to this site, and downloaded the file which is now located on my desktop, but it show that there is nothing in the file??? I can only stay logged on the internet for a few minutes before it freezes and I have to restart it. I can only restart the computer if I unplug the internet. I would like to know if I can do a system restore and if that would help me at all????
I just downloaded another copy of this file and examined it. The dll is version 4.0 and should 146k in size. Once downloaded just move it over to your C:\Windows\System folder where it must reside.
As for your internet problems..... I am assuming when you say "system restore" you are referring to Windows XP? If the answer is yes then by all means try doing a system restore.
I ended up going through the WIN98 setup again, and now that file doesn't show up as missing. I still don't know how to find it, to see if it there. The only problem I seem to have now is that I can only start the computer without the internet connected. Once it is up and running then I can plug in the internet. I don't know if it will freeze again or not. I have tried everyone's suggestion with respect to seeing if there was a virus, I did two scans, one with McAfee and one with housecall and nothing was found. I also have spybot and am not sure when it list eveything, what to get rid of and what to keep? I have bookmarked that dll site, just in case I need it again. Any ideas why the system will not do a complete start with the internet connnected? Thanks
To double check the location of the file just use the Find option on the Start Button. Click
Start then
Find then select
Files or Folders. Then type in the file's name and have it
Look In your C: drive. Then click on the
Find Now button.
As for your internet problem.... if your ISP provided you with software to connect to them then I would also contact them. The problem could be specific to their software.
Another idea regarding the internet..... are you connecting via a telephone line or network card? If it's the network card then double check your BIOS Setup to see that the hard drive is listed
before the network card in the boot order. The system might be hanging at boot looking for a network to boot from if the NIC is listed before the hard drive in the boot sequence.
Thanks for the help. With respect to the internet problem, I have cable. I have a router and a wireless card. The internet is connected to the router, the router is connected to the tower for the desktop and the wireless card is in my laptop. I still have access to the internet with no problems on my laptop, which is how I post all my questions. The desktop has always been set-up this way since we got the laptop.
I do not receive the error message with respect to any files, since I went through the WIN98 set-up again. I have to plug in the router cable to the tower when I want the desktop to connect the internet, it works, but freezes up and we have to shut down and start up again.
I just went through the find files and found the missing file, it is there both from the download as well as from the original installation back '99.
Any ideas why the internet will not work when connected first. Also, I know this place to post this question, but when the computer boots up it as for our network password each and everytime. is there anyway to get rid of this all we do is click enter and it goes, but it is annoying. Thanks
Unfortunately I am all out of suggestions except for directing you to another forum. Regarding the networking problems you should post in the
Dimension - Networking forum to see what other ideas are offered to resolve your problem.
