here is the proper command to replace the hal.dll from CD (or any other compressed file), be sure to include spaces.
expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll Substitute d: for the drive letter of your CD.
anytime there is a _ at the end of a file extension it means the file is compressed and must be expanded before it is of use.
Once you are into windows desktop you can clean up the boot ini file by doing a Start/Run, then type in msconfig hit ok, then go to the Boot INI tab and click "check all boot paths"

i also tried to do the following " expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll" on the recovery console, but i couldnt because it never recognised the harddrive as WINDOWS and then asked me for administrator password etc..instead, it left that place blank
any suggestions?
