missing or corrupt file message

Dell on-line support told me to delete my nvidia file from my c drive. After that i can't start my computer. I get the following message.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.
WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Computer will not start in safe mode.
Will Chkdsk /r fix this without distorying my data files. Or is there any other way to fix it without distroying my other data. I tryed using another hard drive with windows XP pro set up on it to get the Config\system files but it won't let me copy them

Ray R,
Yes, there is a way to repair a corrupt System hive without losing any data.  Go here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545.  Print out KB 307545 article.  Follow instructions to the letter.  Rather tedious, but well worth the effort.  Let us know if you have any  problems.

The Guided Help download is a new thing that has been added to KB 307545.  I've never used it, but the manual method works like a charm.

Ray before trying anything, you can remove the hard drive and connect it to another machine to get that valuable data, using this. Just in case the registry repair does not go well.
Works with 2.5", 3.5" HDD, 5.25" CD/DVD Drive and SATA Drives
