missing or corrupt NTOSKRNL.EXE

i know there are several posts regarding missing or corrupt NTOSKRNL.EXE files, but i just wanted to see if anyone out there had any other effort ideas to help me. apparently the USB cable to my mp3 player was pulled out of the computer before it was ok to remove and i am concluding that this has created this dilemma. i have a Dell Inspiron E1405 running Windows XP Media Center Edition. when starting the computer i receive a: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \system32\ntoskrnl.exe. Please re-install a copy of the above file. at the microsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314477) website they list various methods to which this error can be fixed. i have tried them all... 1) i tried the "expand e:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ f:\windows\system32" method. doesnt work. 2)i tried the "chkdsk /r" method. did not fix it. 3) i tried the bootcfg /repair" method. did not fix it. would using fixmbr method do anything for me?? any other last efforts i should consider? any help/support is hugely and muchly appreciated...!

Below is information addressing this problem. I found the information on the internet some time ago and had it on file in case I ever encountered this problem. It may help.

  1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.
  2. Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
  3. In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
  4. Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
  5. If no password - press the enter key.
  6. Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
  7. You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file.
  8. Type exit to reboot the computer.

I really wish people would describe their problems with more detail than "did not work"  "did not fix it"

Most of these methods posted are tried and true, when they don't work, most of the time it is operator error.

I have been repairing Windows PC bsod's and error codes for 10 years, rarely had one that "did not work" or "did not fix it", the only time they did not, was a failing hard drive or other hardware such as memory modules.

If you want expert help you need to give very detailed explanations of what you have tried.
