missing setup.exe reinstalling windows98se

setup.exe not found reinstalling windows98 se
we reformatted and reinstalled windows on my dell t700 dimension. we followed the protocol on the dell web site exactly. we used the boot floppy and cd windows 98 and the dell resource cd. when we reload windows 98 we get "unable to find setup.exe specified in the win.ini file". we were unable to find in the conference 98 as a previous forum user suggested and the other suggestion that dell gives you all you need on the discs was not sufficient for us. would you have any thoughts to direct us to get our setup.exe back. we are operating but under ms-dos compatability mode as the pci controller under device is ? under conflicts. looking forward to your response

When you talk about something missing the "setup.exe" file, it sounds like you are refering to the setup file on the CD.  Is this correct?  There should not be a setup.exe file for Win 98 on the hard drive.  And even if there was, the Win 98 Setup Program should reinstall it.  Therefore, it sounds like the CD you have has problems.  Is it a burned copy?  If so, try re-burning it from the original CD.  Or just use the original CD itself.

If I am way off, I am sorry.  I am the computer tech for my old high school and I have yet to see that particular error message that you describe.

tynestwo,

You don't install Windows 98 from the Dell Recovery CD through the boot diskette. Instructions for installation are here. Complete instructions for the reinstallation (including your drivers) can be found through the Reinstall Guide link which is at the top of the page you can reach through the Solutions tab above the forum.
