Denny - please read my reply to Dan re "finally editing the Registry." My icons are all back, and thanks to you and all the "Forum Folk" I'm a much happier fellow! The DellTalk forum has been so helpful - and you who take extra time out of your busy days to bend down and help us "amateurs" up - well, it is most appreciated!!! Larry R
Well, Dan, I finally "took the plunge." Edited a line in the Registry. Yep - with shaky fingers I went Online and looked up several "how edit the Registry" columns - copied down the one that was easiest to understand (I'm a retired news correspondent, so as you know, brain power isn't needed! GRIN)
Anyway - did as I was told by several people, both on and off this forum - went into the HKEY Software-Microsoft-Windows-Current Version-Explorer - THEN double-clicked on Max Cached Icons in the R pane. To my surprise, the max number was "0"!! So - as several kind folk suggested, I increased it to 2000, clicked OK, then exited.
Now I was really nervous, but re-booted -and VOILA! ALL MY ICONS CAME UP JUST RIGHT! I was so happy I sent everybody on this forum a mental "hug" - and drank a cup of green tea to celebrate! My wife is relieved, 'cause she's really really tired of my carping and whining. Sigh. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU ALL!!!!! Larry R
Glad to hear that it was fixed. In reviewing this thread I find that the solution was at hand much earlier. In
this post you told Dan you had tried everything suggested except the IconFix.reg file from the Delltalk Tweekz. The only thing that little file does it set Max Cached Icons to a value of 2048 (without the need to open the registry editor).
Yo - Denny - that is VERY interesting, because after I downloaded and "merged" the file - I opened and edited the registry. That's when I noticed the "0" figure in max icon. No mention of 2048 there at all. Something did not work right, I guess. Maybe I messed up (again?) I did as ordered - downloaded to desktop, then R-clicked on "merge." Nothing seemed to happen - and I guess, after all, that nothing DID! Any ideas on this? thanx again - Larry R
I can't explain it. I checked just to make sure the file was not corrupted (it isn't) and downloaded it and ran it and it worked as advertised on my system. If you still have the file, you might try opening it in Notepad to see what it contains. It should read:
Yo - Denny. Tried again. Downloaded the file to Windows temp. R-clicked on the file, then L-clicked on "Merge." Nothing happened. Went into the registry - still set at my earlier 2000 mark.
Could this have anything to do with Norton? Since I installed the Systemworks program I got shut out of RegEdit - have to go there through another program I downloaded: "RegClean" - a good, if conservative program I got from Smart Computing magazine. Oh, yes, I DID disable script blocking before trying to use your file.
Now - I went back into the registry, and hand-changed the max icon number to 2048. Sigh. guess I'll leave it that way - my computer works fine now! Just can't explain why your file doesn't work on my computer. thanx - again - LR
Yo - Denny. Triple sigh here. Yes, I DID open your program in Notepad, and it DID say exactly what you say it should.
It was downloaded to my Desktop. I just checked in the register, and the Max Cached Icons there still read the "2000" that I put in there this morning. SO - I did as directed. I R-clicked on the icon for your program. Then L-clicked on "Merge." That was it. Nothing apparently happened. Then, I re-booted. then I went back into Registry - still "2000" no change. Am I (obviously) doing something wrong here? I can change the figure to 2048, but I wonder why your program didn't work? Help, if you can. Thanx - LR
