The last part of your post bothered me. If you can't get Repair Reinstall to run, your only option may be for a reinstall of XP. Is your virus program running with the latest update. Scan for viruses, all drives.
Thanks for the response, John. My son says he has tried to run his virus program, but can't get that to work either. He's away at college, so I have to try to help him over the phone.
After install, open, click check for updates, download those (they self install); close/open Spybot (for the updates to take effect) and click check for problems.

Some viruses attack the AV. Tell him to try an on line virus scan
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/
Click on check for security, then virus scan.
If that finds nothing, I suggest you he download the free Spybot S&D
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=download
After install, open, click check for updates, download those (they self install); close/open Spybot (for the updates to take effect) and click check for problems.
