Mccdaddy,

First, right click on Start. Left click on Explore.  Go to C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper.  Do you see the wallpaper files?   If you click on View|Thumbnails, do you see the wallpaper pictures?

If they are there, go the the following site. Scroll down to Line 142. Click on Allow Wallpaper/Background Changes in the right column. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

mcdaddy.. may not be a virus. but could be a spyware.. run an anti-spyware on the administrator account under "safe-mode" so you can resolve the issue. try getting spybot at www.download.com its free and it works...

mccdaddy,

See if the download available in gerryf's post in this thread corrects the problem. (Create a Restore Point before merging the *.reg files, of course.)

I am having the same problem. When I right click on my desktop instead of the regular options about icons and the display it's as if I'm clicking on a document. If I choose properties I see a document properties window. For the line address:(URL): file://C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html. I can't find this document. I have run two different types of spyware and it hasn't found this. Any ideas.

Thanks, all, for your replies.

I had my friend do a virus & spyware scan and clean-up. After rebooting the problem remained, so I had him go into the Control Panel> Display> Desktop> Customize Desktop> Web and make sure "My Current Home Page" and "Lock Desktop Items" were unchecked.

The image files are showing in his Windows folder, so my next step is to try one of the recommended files. I've downloaded fixreg.reg and wallpaperenable.reg. I won't get to run them on his computer until Monday.

Thanks again for all your help.

Mccdaddy and Angmc,

Don't know if there's any surefire, 100% way to prevent it.  My advice would be to keep antivirus, antispyware, and firewalls up to date.  And save copies of these posts and those downloaded fixes to removable media.
