Modular bay devices doesn't show up anymore

Have just switched to Windows XP from Windows 2000 with a bunch of irritating problems. One is that my modular bay devices does not show up automatically when inserted anymore, which they did with Windows 2000.
Now I have to enter the device manager and scan for hardware changes for the devices to show up, why is that?
I don't have a "safe removal tool" visible either, but I managed to find a way to start it. However, nothing shows up there, no modular bay devices, not even my usb webcam. They were all there in Windows 2000. What's going on here?

As it was a clean install, you might still need to install the chipset drivers. Downloads for the Precision M50 are listed here:

No change whatsoever, I still need to scan for hardware changes for the devices to show up. Would be interesting to hear from others with XP that used module bay devices.

Didn't need any drivers in W2K, but I'll give these a try.

Was this a clean install of XP or an upgrade? What are the devices and did you install the drivers for the devices?

It was a clean install of XP SP2. Have not installed any drivers, don't think there are any (neede). The devices are a harddrive and a dvd+rw. I have a floppy too but that one works okay, in fact it's always visible even when it's not in the bay (not like this in W2K).
When I reboot they usually shows up, but what's more irritaing, they steal the drive letter that's already assigned to my network drives, so I have to change this every time. Is this a normal "feature" in XP? It does not work like this with W2K, the drive letters already assigned by a network drive can't be used by any other drive before it has been disconnected, it's simply unavailable in the disc management.
