Monitor shut down and/or screen savers not working

Dimension E521 is only 3 days old.  At first, before I transferred files from my XP computer the screen saver took hold after 10 minutes idle, same with the monitor power after 30 minutes.

I guess it goes without saying that something I loaded onto the machine is affecting the time outs.  Do I need to start from scratch to find out who the culprit is?

Interesting thought.............I'm using a Microsoft optical mouse 2.0 and wireless keyboard.

I switched from a Logitech optical about the same time the problem started.  I'll have to reconnect the logitech (which I never tried with Vista) and or the stock wired mouse and keyboard.

Thanks for pointing me hopefully in the right direction.

I was on the phone with Dell for almost 2 hours yesterday and still do not have a Screen Saver.  Technician seems to think it was my Microsoft Wireless Mouse that is causing the problem.  They were suppose to call me back today and guess what............haven't heard a word yet.  I have a list of 4/5 problems.  Very close to returning system and purchasing elsewhere.  Very frustrating.

It is the Microsoft wireless mouse. It is funny that it is not compatable with Microsoft windows XP or Vista. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911895

As I said before, it is the MS wireless mouse/keyboard 27 mhz reciever.

For those of you that have Microsoft wireless desktop hardware devices such as a mouse or keyboard (in USB mode) who have had issues with screensavers not enabling, there is now an update to address this issue. My contact at Microsoft reported the following to me:

If you have your 27 Mhz wireless device connected to the system when you go to Windows Update, it will give you a HID update that corrects the problem where the screen savers don’t work with our 27 Mhz wireless products plugged in. This will fix it on both Vista and XP.

You will see this on Windows/Microsoft Update in the 'Hardware, Optional' category if you have your Microsoft 27Mhz Wireless device plugged into the USB port (27Mhz wireless devices basically mean any keyboard/mouse product that doesn't use Bluetooth). It will show up as 'HID Non-User Input Data Filter' from Microsoft.

For those of you who are wondering, the update consists of four files.

  • NuidFltr.cat
  • NuidFltr.inf
  • NuidFltr.sys (v 6.20.102.0)
  • WdfCoInstaller01005.dll (v 1.5.6000.0)

Hopefully this update will fix the issues that some of you have been having.

More details about this update can be found in the resolution section of the following KB article.
The screen saver does not start after you install the Wireless Optical Desktop device (KB913405)

Thank you for that. I had given up on Microsoft resolving it.

I would like to see this made into a sticky by the Mod.

I'm having the same problem with my screen saver not working.  I have a new E1705 and a wireless Logitech mouse and keyboard.  Does anyone know if there is a software update for Logitech?  I couldn't anything in my initial search which, admittedly, wasn't very long.

Thanks in advance,
Jess

:smileyvery-happy:The Microsoft Update did the trick. It took them long enough to get it out though.

I have not heard of any Logitech device causing this problem before. Until my current Microsoft mouse I have always used Logitech and never had any problems, I only switched to this one because Logitech does not currently have one out that is as comfortable to me as the MX700 was and I just recently killed my last spare.
I have gotten into a practice of when I find a device that I really like I buy a few extra's to put away for the inevitable day when it will die and there is not a replacement any longer.

If I see anything regarding the problem being caused by a Logitech wireless mouse I will post it back here.

As I stated earlier, it's the 27mhz second gen MS receiver, it has absolutely nothing to do with logitech

Ok I did a fast search and found several things on the Logitech. It looks like there have been some people that have found that the Logitech Desktop Messenger prevents the screen saver from starting at times. I did not find alot of detail on it but it is a start for you. You can try to disable the desktop messenger without losing any functionality of your Logiteh devices and see if that helps any.

My son is using the Logitech MX revolution wireless mouse on his Insperion 9400 with Vista Home Premium. Everything works fine.

And I appreciate it.  What operating system does your son have?  What type of Logitech mouse does he have?  Maybe it's the mouse and keyboard combo that causes the screen saver/monitor issue.

His pc is loaded with Vista Home Premium, and the mouse is a Logitech MX revolution wireless mouse.
Here is the link to Logitech's download page, check and see if your combo has a Vista upgrade:

dc, thank you.  That was actually my first thought yesterday when I first read this thread.  I couldn't find anywher that says I can disable that.  I'll do some deeper searching today.  Hopefully I will have more time.

gdwrch, good for your son.

I'm actually doing that as we speak.  I've got a Logitech EX110 desktop.  Oh, also, I don't think I have the Logitech Desktop Messenger that dc mentioned earlier.
