More then one copy installed

Under program files, the following AOL folders are listed three times.
America Online 9(2)(2).0
America Online 9(2).0
America Online 9.0
AOL Companion
AOL Companion (2)
AOL Companion (2)(2)

Having multiple copies here is not a good idea so I would think that I would delete the folders that contain a 2 in them, leave them in the recycle bin, see what happens and if AOL still works then empty the recycle bin. Unless deleting anything in the list would be a bad idea, but I wouldn't think so.

before you go crazy and delete the folders go to your control panel and look in your add/remove program list. look for aol uninstaller or aol check which version to remove open it and it should list all of your versions of aol companion and of aol put a checkmark next to the ones that have the 2 after them and leave the ones that dont alone and the duplicates should be safely removed. it will then ask you to reboot the computer so that the changes take effect. then and only then you can go to your programs look to see if the duplicate folders are still listed with the 2 after it then you can send them to the recycle bin. leave them in the recycle bin to see if everything works ok then you can safely empty the recycle bin. hope this helps you.

The AOL uninstaller doesn't help me because it only lists AOLb, but I understand what you're saying with the recycle bin.

I could do that, but I prefer to take out the foldes with the 2 in them and see what happens. I'll do that this weekend sometime.

the other thing you can do is just uninstall and reinstall aol so youll get rid of those extra copies. its annoying but effective and does no harm.

Don't delete anything. Delete only removes the folders and not traces in the Registry. Go into Add/Remove programs. Select AOL. It will search for aol versions on your computer. It will give you a list of the date each one was last used. I'd uninstall all that have not been used recently. It will also ask you if you want to save download and filing cabinet folders, the choice is yours. I've never seen aol 2 etc. I've seen aolb, c, etc. As far as AOL Companion. I never use it and just remove it.

What would I look for in the registry? If I move the extra folders to the recycle bin and everything is ok, then I would delete the folders and it's true that I would have invalid items in the registry, but I can take care of that with system mechanic.
