Move Documents and Settings to a different drive

My system drive is filling up real quick. Is there any way to move the Documents and Settings folder to a different partition or hard drive to free up some space?

You could simply move your "My Documents" folder, which is probably where most of your files reside. To do that, right-click on the folder, select "Properties", and then click on "Move...".

Otherwise, if you want to move all of your "Documents and Settings" stuff, you can use TweakUI to achieve that. However, if it is in the "Setting" part where you find most of your disk space is gobbled up, then something might be wrong with your system, and you would do well to first figure out what files use up all that space...

Thats not so easy. When I try moving it with a right click it gives me an error saying that its a system folder and cannot be moved. And Documents and settings is not one of the special folders I can reassign with Tweak UI. It's not so much the settings but the doccuments that are taking up space. I don't want to move everything piecemail, just one smooth transition.

RyBenn,

You cannot move Documents and Settings but you should be able to move My Documents with a right-click and selecting "Move" as Dietmar suggested.

Perhaps HD space is used by old Restore Points. ?
You can Delete All but the Last Restore Point (by date) by using  "Disk Cleanup" > "More Options"
"System Restore"  , "Clean up..."  button , Yes  then Cancel otherwise its executes Disk Cleanup for ticked items.
--------------------
If it isn't using HD space you can move "My Documents" Folder as suggested before.
Outlook Express  message store which is in "Documents and Settings".
IE Favorites which is in "Documents and Settings".
-----------------
To move Outlook Express Folder , create new Folder called Outlook Express  in partition or extra HD.
Open OE , Tools > Options > Maintenance >  Store Folder > Change.
To move IE Favorites  , create new Folder called Favorites in partition or extra HD & use FREE Microsoft Program TweakUI for XP+SP1
select "My Computer"  > Special Folders > Favorites , Change Location button then click Apply when done.
-------------------
You can download FREE Microsoft program called TweakUI for XP+ SP1 from;

Re-read what I wrote. You need to right-click on the "My Documents" special folder, not on "C:\Documents and Settings\etc..."

And Documents and settings is not one of the special folders I can reassign with Tweak UI.

I apologize, I misremembered that one. If you still want to move the whole "Documenst and Settings"-hierarchy, you can follow the instructions at

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;236621

It's not so much the settings but the doccuments that are taking up space. I don't want to move everything piecemail, just one smooth transition.

That is what the frst method I gave you will do for you.
