Msconfig error -- Please Read

Okay I typed in msconfig under run from the startup menu because I wanted to get rid of the stupid startup items such as the system32 and McAfee. So I "disabled all items" on the startup tab and it changed my startup to selective startup. So, I restarted my computer and I get an old classic style of Windows XP (i'm assuming) instead of the green/blue new color. I checked everything and nothing was changed. Also, when I open IE and go to something like google.com at the bottom it says badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com which I've never seen before. So I went to add/remove programs and got rid of that, although it still shows up when I open IE. I even changed back to normal startup and nothing changes. I can't get on AOL either...So, basically msconfig has now not allowed me to get on the internet, changed mystyle/look to some old greyish type version of the computer and when I go to network connections I see nothing. I checked for viruses and found none...If anyone can help me that'd be great as I'm freaking out here.

ps- This is for Windows XP.

Well I'm on another computer in a different room and have no internet access in the computer with the spyware or whatever so should I burn a cd and transfer adaware to that computer?

Also, do you have any idea why I can't choose the blue/green windows xp look as its only letting me have that Windows 98 junk on the other computer.

I just called Dell and they said that it should let you system restore, but once you are on selective startup i read on microsoft that your system restores delete.  Dell said that I need to boot something to the cd and save all my data files and install again or something...they acted like they had never seen this problem before.

balla45,

Disabling all items on the startup tab is effective but ill-advised, because among other things you will prevent your antivirus program from loading at startup. The fix for the system32 appearing at startup is here.

The URL that keeps appearing is undoubtedly from spyware on your system. Download either Ad-aware from here and/or Spybot from here. Check online for updates to their databases then run either and delete all the spyware they identify. If that does not correct the problems you are having, download HijackThis from here and post the log it generated in the Special Interest - Virus Identification and Removal conference where the experts can interpret it and tell you how to clean your system.

balla45,

You wrote, "Dell said that I need to boot something to the cd and save all my data files and install again or something...they acted like they had never seen this problem before."

It is true that a clean reinstall of Windows will correct the problems that you are currently having. The procedure that Dell was referring to is outlined here.

Will I need to save files and folders and programs or will the re-install not affect anything?  If you could tell me what I need to put on cd's and disk's I think I could do the re-install.

Also, I've never done this before but have pretty good knowledge of the computer, should I do this myself or let someone else who's more qualified handle it?  Thanks!

balla45,

From the link I provided in my earlier post: perishable data includes e-mail folders, address books in e-mail programs, My Documents folders, your Desktop, Favorites, Web browser bookmarks, and any other data that has been created by specific applications. Note that there is no need to back up anything that already exists on CD such as applications.

Take a close look at either of the links that page provides to detailed instructions for a clean install (print either one out if you wish). The procedure is not difficult--much easier than doing a reinstall of a Windows 9X operating system.

I have several emails on outlook that I need, do I have to somehow back this up or can I keep it? Also, I have songs on musicmatch jukebox, I'm assuming I can keep these too. Correct?

Thanks

By the way, I talked with another tech guy at my dad's work and he seems to think I've got a virus as when I open up device manager it's blank.  Maybe the msconfig caused the mcafee to shutdown and not block my system for me and I got a virus.

balla45,

You can check for viruses with an online scan here.

You can simply copy your music files to CD to back them up. Your Outlook data can be exported to CD as well by opening Outlook and going to File|Import and Export|Export to a File and selecting .pst as the file format. Once you have reinstalled Outlook you can import it by going to File|Import and Export|Import from another program or file|Personal Folder File (.pst).

How can I scan on that computer if I don't have internet access?

balla45,

Good point, I had forgotten all the symptoms of the computer. Reistalling XP will get rid of any virus that might be present. Make sure to scan the backup data for viruses before restoring it to the computer after reinstalling the OS.

Hi Denny, I have the same issue with IE and grandstreetinteractive.com. The difference, Off line if I open IE, every thing starts to quiver, then to the left I get :Finding Site: badurlgrandstreetinteractive.com. I'm running Windows 98Sec, msn exployer. Would the advise you gave him work for me as well. He has XP.

Thanks
