MSConfig.exe

MS Windows XP Home 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600, Inspiron 8200, BIOS A08, 12/10/2002

Problem: Running Dell PC checkup from website and tried to install  the Microsoft configuration utility upgrade. When I went to check I could not open Configuration Utility via Help and Support Link seem dead,  tried clicking run and typing msconfig.exe and clicking ok and nothing happens other than the  run window closing. I think something must be out of whack with msconfig. Help with this issue will be appreciated.

Apparently msconfig.exe was messed up prior to trying to install the upgrade.

Charlietoo, Have yoou done an uptodate virus scan to be sure your system is virus free. Also have you scanned for spyware. Post back if you need the programs to do these scans and we can advise. See this also.

I had ran sfc/ Scannow with the installation disk in the cd/rw drive. It ran and completed with out incident. I have Norton Antivirus, Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware SE. All are up to date and scans had already been run before posting here, No Mal-ware

A little history:

My hard drive was failing so I purchased a new one from Dell and made a backup image with Norton Ghost (16 disk). I took everything to a local tech to install the new HD (I know, don't say it) and install the image. Well, on disk 11 he said it erred so he made a Western Digital image of the old HD (which was up to date on all windows updates and clean of spy-ware, viruses, etc.) The first thing I noticed was that MS Office Outlook didn't work and I got a need to re authorize the software as it would run on reduced service unless this was done. I called Microsoft support and we managed to get this cleaned up by removing all of MS Office Pro by running a cleaner and reinstalling... It is working well now. Next I discovered that System Restore didn't work, couldn't get the window even open. I posted here and Tony of this forum helped me work through the fix. It works well now. The next thing I discovered was this problem with MSConfig.exe after running Dell computer check up to install the updated tool tab...Couldn't open MS Config to check for the new tool tab. So here we are.:smileyvery-happy: Hopeful there will be a work around or way to solve this without a complete reinstall of windows and hours of updating.

I am going to hold off doing anything else until you guys have a chance to read the above history.

sounds like a registry or a corrupt file issue due to corruption on old drive.
try running windows repair install over it and then run dsrfix (google it) to restore ctrl f11 funtionality if it has the system restore from dell. (yes try ctrl f11 right on dell boot screen). hold ctrl and hit f11 then let go. it might not work a few times till u get the right timing to verify if its in hard disk or run diskmgmt.msc and look for a 2.5 to 4 gigabyte partition. that is original image of windows with software preinstalled.

Don't see it. The tech had reinstalled the OS on the old hard drive do to worm about a year ago, I don't think he put the hidden partition in.
