Multiple Networks Found

Please help!  I have a new XPS 420 and everytime I start the computer, it finds two available network connections.  "Network" and "Unidentified Network."  It will NOT conncect unless one of these networks is first disabled.  I have been on with XPS support three times and with my ISP (Verizon FIOS) three times.  Both say it's the others fault!  I had no problem connecting my Windows 98 machine.  I am using a wireless router but the fios is hardwired to my ethernet card.  Thanks!

Rossi396,

Perhaps I missed something here.  Do you mean that you have the Verizon FIOS connected via an Ethernet cable to your XPS 420 and the XPS 420 has a wireless card that also connects to the Verizon FIOS wireless router?  If so, I can tell you that will not work with Vista.   Vista's intuitive network interface will see both and just sit there, ponder which connection to use, and show only local access connectivity for both connections.    One or the other will have to be disconnected (disabled) for Vista to access the Internet.  I've run into this problem with local hotels that offer both hardwired and wireless access to the Internet.  Guests who connect Vista laptops to the hotels' hardwired Ethernet jacks must disable their wireless cards to access the Internet.

Please clarify just how your XPS 420 is connected to the Verizon FIOS.

I took a quick look at Verizon FIOS Vista support:  http://www22.verizon.com/content/consumerfios/faqs/faqs#vista7

Not a whole lot of help with Vista is available there.

Thanks for your reply.  First of all, FIOS support said there is no wireless card in my XPS 420.  I thought the same thing and I'm not sure how to find it and/or disable it if it is there.  (I looked in Network Adapters).

The Fios line comes into the house, then into a wireless router, then into my ethernet card in my computer.

I am honestly ready to pay someone to come and look at this!  Fios says it's the computer (which I believe) and Dell says it's Fios.  How could Dell XPS support have been on my computer three times for over three hours and still not figure this out if it's a wireless problem...?

Appreciate any other suggestions you might have!  Thanks again!

Thanks...

Still having the problem.  Last time I looked at merging, I couldn't do it while connected, so I'll try disconnecting and seeing what I get..

Absolutely going out of my mind with this right now!  It seems like this should be so simple but no one can tell me how to fix it!

Thanks again for your reply...

Yes, I have Bluetooth.  A wireless keyboard and mouse.  FIOS actually disabled it at one point thinking it was the problem and then I couldn't get back on my computer.  There are two bluetooth devices listed in the Network Adapters.  One is bluetooth personal area network, one is RFCOMM protocol TDI...

Never mind...I figured it out...!  How's this: ?  Keep in mind that these settings will probably change when I restart my computer and it shows two networks.  Would you like me to restart and try to see if the IPCONFIG screen changes?  THANKS!

"First of all, FIOS support said there is no wireless card in my XPS 420.  I thought the same thing and I'm not sure how to find it and/or disable it if it is there.  (I looked in Network Adapters). "

Check device manager, expand "Network Adapters"

If there is a wireless adapter in there, right click it and choose "disable"

Restart the PC.

Okay...No luck with "manage network connections" in Network and Sharing and deleting or disabling a connection in there.  It only shows one LAN connection "unidentified" when the computer is started even though the "main" screen shows both connections.

The only way to get connected to the internet is to go into Network and Sharing Center and disable one of the connections, either the one labeled NETWORK or the one labeled UNIDENTIFIED by going to "View Status" and then "Disable."  Both connections are using the same driver...Both show up as LAN connections!

Still lost!

MoneyGuyBK...

I want to read whatever it is...but the site tells me I don't have sufficient privileges!  If you could repost somehow that would be great.  In the meantime here's an update for everyone:

It does not appear to be the Bluetooth.  I set up a USB keyboard and mouse, disabled anything that said "Bluetooth" in Network adapters (two items) and restarted the computer.  Still have two stinkin' networks available.

I got on with FIOS again and they say "NO WAY" can this be a configuration problem.  They pinged the router and also looked at the IPCONFIG screens and say there is ONE connection...

Everyone has been great so far and I really appreciate the responses.  Anybody on here live near the Pittsburgh airport?  If so, I'll buy you a beer (or a case) if you can fix this!

Regards,

Rossi & Gio;
Sorry about that, I forgot.

Here's what I wrote ther to Bill in regards to yours and others' similar issue:

hi Bill

Currently I am running a Virtual Machine on my 720H2C
So, in VM, I run Ubuntu for Folding@Home on Team_XPS

Ever since I installed VM, when I point the mouse to the Network icon in taskbar, I see 2 netwroks.
One says connected to Local and Internet, the other says "limited Connectivity"

the second one is for VM, I have had no issues with the setup.

Maybe if you ask that person if s/he has a setup as such?

Peace
