Multiple Networks Found

Please help!  I have a new XPS 420 and everytime I start the computer, it finds two available network connections.  "Network" and "Unidentified Network."  It will NOT conncect unless one of these networks is first disabled.  I have been on with XPS support three times and with my ISP (Verizon FIOS) three times.  Both say it's the others fault!  I had no problem connecting my Windows 98 machine.  I am using a wireless router but the fios is hardwired to my ethernet card.  Thanks!

Not sure what VM is or how it runs, but I don't think that's the problem.  I still haven't figured out the problem.  I've been leaving the computer on so that I don't have to go through the hassle of disabling a connection when I restart.

I sent my Dell XPS support team an email two days ago and they have yet to respond.  Maybe they're busy?  Says they will respond within one day!

Still haven't figured it out...Have a good weekend everyone...

VM = Virtual Machine
I use it to run Ubuntu for a project called Folding@Home to help Stanford U try to find cures for diseases.

VM basically creates a machine inside your machine so that you can run other opersting systems without dual booting.

So, I have Windows Vista on my PC, and I can open VM and run Linux.
I could run other versions of Windows too if I needed inside VM.

* Please post back with what Dell says about your issues, as I am interested to know.
  Good Luck

Peace

See if there's any solution here:
http://snipurl.com/1v0bj
Read the entire thread. It starts out with XP, and ends up with Vista.

And see this one, too:

WOOHOOO!

Okay Guys...It's fixed!

First of all a big thank you to everyone who has responded.  Rohe...I'm not sure what your links will show but I've got it working, so I didn't look!

Thanks specifically to Bill B. for his help.  (By the way...he had the fix which wasn't tried and could have prevented a day or so of frustration here...)  And to MoneyGuyBK for his interest and suggestions.

Okay...I lost everything in my computer or I would have responded to Bill B...Got Dell XPS on again today and told them I was going to send the thing back!  ARMANDO, in Ottawa, had me restore to factory.  Couldn't connect at all!  Set up the PPPOE...now have two connections as before but both show up in Network and Sharing!  Go into Network and Sharing and delete PPPOE.  Now show only one LAN connection but I still get the dreaded "Unidentified" and "Network" connections when I roll the mouse over the Internet icon in the right hand bottom corner.  DISABLE IPV6 ON THE LAN CONNECTION SETTINGS....PROBLEM RESOLVED!

Unbelievable that I've had FOUR Dell tech's online and no one could figure it out.  BILL B. HAD IT FIGURED OUT!  Sorry, Bill, but I was nervous about changing those settings as I was sure it had something to do with the way I set up the machine out of the box.  (That's why I agreed to the restore).

Armando was great and believes that a bulletin will be written on this!  I hope they put my name on it!  When I asked what caused this they couldn't tell me.  This was literally an out of the box issue.  It may have something to do with my router / ISP / VISTA combination.  I'm sure it will come out in the near future.

In closing...Thanks again to EVERYONE here.  You took the time to read and help when you didn't need to.  I really do appreciate it.  And I'm sorry I didn't change those IPV settings earlier.

As MoneyGuyBK likes to say...

PEACE

Everyone:

Here's a message I sent to Bill B. about the ONGOING problem with the "Multiple Networks."  Initially, I thought disabling IPv6 fixed the problem.  I believe that all that did was somehow change the settings for my PC-cillin firewall.  When I returned from a trip today, I noticed that the firewall wasn't enabled.  I enabled it and the problem started all over.  I uninstalled the entire Trend program and installed a trail version of NIS 2008.  Guess what...?!  NO PROBLEMS.  I restarted three times.  AND....IPv6 is enabled!  I guess something in PC-cillin doesn't like my router, VISTA, ISP, or something in the cillin firewall settings is off (or a combination of all of these).  Dell (and all of you) worked at this for nearly two weeks with no resolution.  In the end, they credited me whatever amount I paid for the Trend product and I'll probably buy the NIS when my 15 day trial ends...

Take care and happy holidays......

(Email to Bill follows):

Hi, Bill:

Guess what...!?  The problem is back!  Unbelievable.  I now think it has something to do with the PC-Cillin firewall.  I noticed that the Cillin firewall wasn't on so I uninstalled it and then reinstalled per Trend's directions.  Firewall works perfectly except now I can't connect to the internet again!  I verified that IPv6 is disabled, too...!

Guess it's time for another two hour session with Dell!  Maybe this is a Trend issue.  Either way, I'm not happy with Dell for not being able to figure it out...I think now that ever since I could connect to the internet, I had no firewall protection.

Well, if you have any ideas, I'd like to hear from you.  Feel free to post this email on the forums...

Thanks and regards,

Rossi;
Thanx for sharing this info....

When I ordered mine I wanted to buy it with Trend Micro Suite, but Dell insisted to configure my Beast with McAfee Suite.

I now wonder if the issue may just be what you said, and I will try to tinker with McAfee's settings as now that you have mentioned it, even though I usually do not have issues with "Multiple Networks Found" message, I do from time to time notice a slowdown in connection when switching between sites in IE7.

Peace

PS DellBill has Dell looked into this issue?
I am surprised that when Rossi has called in, no one was able to assist him!!!

Thanks for the reply, Money:

I remember telling the guys at XPS support about the firewall settings.  When Network and Sharing Center was opened (with the two networks showing) it kept popping up a message that said something to the effect of, "For best results, make sure the settings below are the same as in your firewall."  It was referring to the settings for Network Discovery, File Sharing, etc.  Regardless, cillin caused the problem as NIS 2008 has worked flawlessly.

The only reason I caught the problem being the firewall is that it was "greyed out" on the cillin screen.  Re-enable it...boom...two networks.  I guess I could have called Trend, but after five or six calls to Dell, I'd had enough.

I agree with your thoughts about Dell.  Although they tried (as did everyone here) diligently, they simply couldn't figure it out.  Giving me a $35.00 rebate for the cillin was nice, but this was literally a TWO WEEK ordeal..!

Peace right back at ya...

Tony

Bill, Money, Rossi....

I have been keeping up with this thread because i have the EXACT same problem .... FIOS actiontec router... brand new xps 420 arrived on 12/13/2007... preinstalled cillin security....

I'm still unclear as to how to actually resolve this whole deboggle.

I am a norton kinda guy so i will be wiping out cillin completely.  Can i just uncheck the ipv6 from the gigabit ethernet properties and be done with everything??? or am i also required to go into regedit and actually disable ipv6??

Hello, MBiehl21:

Don't disable the IPv6 if you're going to get rid of the Trend software.  You may want to give Bill B. or one of his colleagues in Oklahoma City (XPS Support) a call (I'm thinking of Ben Jimenez as he thinks he may understand the problem now).  The IPv6 is now enabled on my system with NIS 2008 and working fine.  The only way I could get on with the 'cillin was to disable the firewall and then reconnect.  I could also start the computer without the 'cillin, connect to the internet and enable the firewall.  But...you shouldn't have to do that.

I think it definitely has something to do with the firewall settings in Trend / 'cillin.  The thing is, Norton is "plug and play," for lack of a better explanation.  It doesn't need configured.  It just works.

Good Luck...

By the way...Money and Bill B....Dell is providing a three year NIS 2008 subscription after the lengthy issue.  I thought that was fair...

Well, it turns out I've had the exact same problem.  Got rid of the Trend-Micro software and poof!...no more network connection problems.

So I call Dell to see if I can get NIS 2008 as a replacement...  It was like being in the middle of a circular firing squad!  Tech support said it was a Customer Care issue.  Customer Care said it was a Tech issue.  On the third try with Customer Care, all they would do is send a new copy of Trend Micro!!  Great...replace the non-working software with new non-working software.

Well, since I have no anti-virus software here now...I'm off to Costco to buy NIS 2008.   Next will be a very polite email to Michael Dell (and maybe a copy of my Costco receipt) to tell him that some people in Tech Support and Customer care really need to think just a tad outside the box.

STOP DON"T DO IT. :smileysurprised:  Go with free stuff. You really don't need the hassles with norton. There are quite a few excellent free av and firewall software.

Zone Alarm

Comodo

good free firewalls.

AVAST

I run with Avast and windows firewall.
