My computer is froze on the desktop. The cursor is not showing up on the screen and the keyboard is not
working. It is the computer that runs the network at my house and I am using my laptop to post this message
through the stuck computer's internet connection.
The computer is a Dimension 2400 XP SP2, Home. 2.66 GHz.; 256 MBs. RAM; 250 GB. WD Hardrive. With
a 17" CRT Monitor. The Hardrive was installed about 2 months ago, after the originals failure. I did a clean install of XP SP1 and then installed SP2 from a disc I got from Microsoft a couple years ago.

That was when it first happened last Thursday. Now the Monitor is black and the indicator lite is yellow. So when I press the on off button on the monitor, it shuts down but when I turn it back on the power indicator lite is green but after a couple seconds it clicks and goes to yellow.

Is there a way to shut down windows safely?
Right before this happened, the M key on the keyboard got stuck, and after so many M's, windows stopped the M's before I was able to unstick it. I was able to click on the taskbar and before that window came up I had  noticed it was the wrong item, so I clicked on something else trying to bring up the page I was typing on. I believe it went to the desktop when windows was stopping the M key from repeating itself.

Thanks
Malron

The monitor goes to yellow because it's not getting a signal from the PC. When you boot the system, look at the 4 diagnostic LEDs on rear of the tower. If not all green, look up error code in user manual.

If all 4 are green, you could try booting up and pressing F8 before XP starts to load. Select "Last Known Good". If that gets to the desktop, shut down normally and then restart.

If "Last Known" doesn't help, reboot, press F8 and select Safe Mode. Reinstall the video driver.

I wanted to thank you for your help the other day Ron. I did as you suggested and it worked. My monitor is working and most important, my Computer.
I shut down my computer (I used the Power on button, I did not know what else to use,) and waited a couple minutes. I then powered on and hit the F8 key when the windows logo came up. I selected Last Known Good Configuration, hit enter and it then booted to the desktop. I then Shut down normally and Started back up, it booted to the Desktop again and everything is working again. My monitor, the mouse and the keyboard. The keyboard I replaced with a used one I had on hand. I replaced the keyboard because the M key kept sticking and I think this was the main reason for the problem in the first place.
Anyways thanks again Ron I appreciate your time and knowledge.

   Sincerely
