NAV 2003 & SP2

Getting thru to you guys is impossible. Being bounced from bangladesh to hw support to cs to software support. Oh there is  a company name on your order you will have to be on hold for 30 more minutes!

When xp is upgraded to sp2 and  you try to upgrade nav to notify windows of status, symantec claims dell is selling a "beta or preliminary" version and to contact dell. And do not start this trial version nonsense or 21 day support.

In actuality what you call "Full Version" is nav with one year of signature upgrades.

What you call "Trial Version" is the same nav with 90days of sig updates.

Regardless symantec provides security patches/software updates indefinitely just no sigs beyond the date paid for.

Try to tell this to dell is impossible. How are we to update this? You have a full sp2 info page that mentions NAV but you do not even test 2003 to see if it works? The solution is not 2004, 2004 is too lame to use and not approved for our usage since it requires activation.

First of all...... Why are you using SP2?

Microsoft SP2 won't play nice with any antivirus software other than their own.

Tell SP2 not to monitor the status of your AntiVirus....... If you open NAV it will tell you the status. I wouldnt trust another program to tell you what the other is doing.

What does 2004 having activations have to do with it?

Try this to renew your liveupdate subscription:

1) First uninstall NAV/Norton Product and then delete this file:  "Catalog.LiveSubscribe" .  Located for Win XP/2K users  C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantc\LiveSubscribe.

2)  Now re-boot and re-install your Norton Product, that should get you up and running for another year!

Are you trying to get SP2 Security Centre to identify your NAV2003 correctly?

Speaking of a patch being already available, I read elsewhere that some people have had success with getting this Norton WMI Update for NAV2004 to work with NAV2003 and SystemWorks 2003 as well.

They've been promising a patch for NAV (if not specifically 2003) since well before the RTM version of SP2 was released.  I think it's about time they either decide that they don't know how to make versions prior to 2004 work with SP2, or just get off the pot and give public notice of their intention to abandon users of versions prior to 2004 completely - heaven knows the handwriting has been on the wall long enough.  Symantec has taken one mighty plunge into the Junkware Abyss in the last few years.  I could perhaps see an operating system developer doing this, but this shouldn't be rocket science and/or brain surgery for an AV provider.

People magazine?  An AOL chat room?  The restroom wall in the north bound I-75 Rest Area in Macon, GA?

If it's all the same to the rest of the world, I think I'll wait for a bit more definitive source material.

My world doesn't revolve around the restroom walls.  Maybe yours does.

If you really want to find out more, look in other reputable user discussion forums, including Microsoft newsgroup.

My point was that this is a problem that should have been addressed by Symantec, and it should have been addressed long before now.  How is the public to be expected to have any faith in their products, when the only "support" for them are workarounds discovered through trial and error by users, in the course of trying to make do with their ever-declining level of support?  We shouldn't have to be looking for answers to issues like this anywhere other than their own support site, and the fact that we're apparently expected to do so is precisely why the public is losing faith in their products.  We're not talking about cheats for games here, and we're not talking about freeware firewall applications.  If Symantec and the other security product developers are going to continue to keep hounding us about the need for anti virus applications and the like, then they're going to have step up and start supporting their products in a more responsible fashion, so that it isn't necessary to "look in other...discussion forums."

The thing is, they are going to release updates for Symantec Corperate Edition, 2003 and others pretty soon.  If you'd perused their site, you would have seen a timetable on the SP2 info pages showing that these editions will be updated sometime in January, 2005.  Until then just tell Security Center that you have a AV solution you'll monitor yourself.  No big thing.

Flunky.. MSAV? What is that and where do I get it?

So this is a typical symantec SOP and not a problem with oem/dell?

As lame as symantec has become, we REFUSE to use any of their products that require activation and in fact 95% of the pcs we have are running win2k for the same reason.

I have "perused their site."  Front and center at http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/ , under "home and home office/small business" (which is what a good portion of their customers use for support information), there's a link that says "Windows XP Service Pack 2 Information."  If one clicks that link, we're greeted with a host of FAQs regarding SP2, one of which states "Shortly after Microsoft releases Service Pack 2, Symantec will make a correction available through LiveUpdate."

Since SP2 was released in August of 2004, perhaps you can tell me exactly how "January 2005" corresponds with "Shortly after Microsoft releases Service Pack 2."  I'm still looking for anything at the above link which says anything at all about January 2005, though, and this is what's so annoying.  The customers who need accurate support information the most (i.e., the inexperienced "little guys") are the ones having the most trouble getting same.  Those of us who have been doing this for a while aren't the least bit concerned about what the Windows XP Security Center tries to tell us.  It's the users for which the Windows XP Security Center was primarily intended (see "inexperienced little guys") who are having problems with it, and once again, I respectfully maintain that Symantec appears to have outsourced their concern for these customers right along with the rest of their support services.

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/enterprise/sp2/compatibility.html Took about 3 seconds to find both times I looked for it. However, I am going to admit defeat and acknowledge that NAV 2003 is not mentioned on that particular page. Just the Corporate Ediions. My bad. But, this page (http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/sp2/faq.html#9) says that Symantec will release an update soon if you just hold your horses. Think about it though. Would you bust your balls getting an update out for a version you don't even sell anymore and haven't sold for 2 full years? To me, it's merely a gesture of good faith. I'd be inclined not to do it at all. So if it takes until January 5th, it takes until January 5th. Now please, don't mistake me for some Symantec fanboy/girl. It's just what I use because it has a good reputation and I get it for free.

Offsprung, yes SP2 has been officically released. You can download it from Windows Update and you can get it on CD if you are so inclined. Obviously they want you to use the newest version. It just makes good business sense. Furthermore, I don't understand why you have such a big problem with acitivation. Do you have a problem paying for software or what? You may use legit software but a lot of people out there wouldn't unless they are forced to. So buy the stuff, activate it and get over it. If you plan to stay on this no activation course, I hope your ready to keep using Win 2000 and NAV 2003 forever. Activation isn't going anywhere soon.

Have they even "officially" released SP2. Last time I looked it was still all those little preSP2 patches on msliveupdate and that "get ready for" link to sp2 and you had to d/l it using that tech/power user link.

I thought these guys explained it pretty well in above responses.

If you have NAV2004 symliveupdate will install the patch if not they may or may not create a fix for previous versions. Remember they want us all to use the "activation" version.

I will not get into that debate again. We went through it 10 years ago. It does NOT prevent software piracy, it only makes life tough for legitimate users.

If you want SP2 security center to recognise NAV 2003, see my post in this thread:
