Need help fixing Cpu at 100% usage

I Need help fixing my Cpu at 100% usage. Ever since i came back from my vacation sunday my pc has been on the fritz. Running slow. I open up the task manager and the cpu usage is 100% in idle mode, the moment i startup my pc then like after 5 mins everything is slow has. The page file history usage is high too, i read on other forums that this is a ongoing trait i was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and/or can help me.

As you don't give details about what is using the CPU (task manager, process tab), I can only advise the general trouble shooting strategy:

1. Check what is loading on startup,(msconfig, startup tab), uncheck any items you don't need, reboot, see if the problem goes away.

2. Make sure your virus definitions are up to date and cscan for virus

3. Check for spyware/malware/hijackers with Adaware, Spybot, from links in

As for page file usage, do you have intensive apps running when this happens? How much RAM do you have?

Sorry about that, I have 512mb ram, i did everything, re-instillation of xp (not fresh) virus scanned, adware, and malware, nothing. I am thinking about just reformat and start fresh.

it sounds like you have some program hanging.. you can look in task manager/processes to see what process is using all the processor power, which program is hanging..

In Task manager, applications tab are any entries marked as 'not responding' (='hanging in common parlance)

In task manager, applications tab, highlight the item that says not responding, click end task. For stubborn cases, if it does not end immediately, you might get a message box saying not responding click end again until it does.
