Need product ID for re-installing Windows XP?

Hello,

I bought a Dell notebook about two years ago. Recently, it has bee running really slowly, and I intend to re-install the operating system. However, when I inserted the recovery CD, it asked for the product ID. I called the technical support, and the representative will not give me the product ID. Instead, he would direct me to a technician on a fee-basis or suggest I contact Microsoft and pay 300 dollars for a new windows operating system.  It seems that many people have re-installed windows Xp themselves. How do you solve the issue of product ID?

Thanks!

Are you using the operating system cd? When I did a format & reinstall of XP on my Dell computer it skipped the part asking for a ID. It might not be the right CD for your computer. Have Dell send you another one for your computer. Give them all the info on your laptop.

Make sure you boot to the cd, not access it from within Windows.

Thank you all for the answers.

When I first got the laptop, it did not come with the recovery CD. So, I called the Dell representative, and they send me an additional copy, and there is no keycode on the disk. Basically, I have never got a keycode for the OP from DELL.

This is the first time for me to re-install the OP on dell laptop. Can anyone point the easiest way to do this? Here is the information for my laptop?
