.Net Framework Question, Please

Hello:

Trying to get a program to run correctly that apparently requires .net
framework 1.1 (won't work with a later version, I'm told).

I looked on the control panel's add/remove list, and it looks like I have,
possibly, 3 versions !

.net framework 1.1
.net framework 1.1 Hotfix KB886903
.net framework 2.0

Only the 2.0 vers seems to have a file size associated with it in the
listing

Which vers am I likely running ? How would I check for sure ?

Should I delete the other two versions ?
(If so, how (from the add/remove list ?)

Anything else I should be asking re this; any caveats about deleting, etc. ?
BTW: where do these programs reside (folder and path to ?)

Thanks,
Bob

If your app won't work with 2.0, I'd recommend removing that via Add/Remove Programs, then go to Windows Update and install any Critical or Recommended updates related to 1.1.  At that point, you shoulld be all set.

Hi,

Much thanks for help; appreciate it.
Not too sharp with all of this.

Should I leave the regular 1.1, or the 1.1 with the Hotfix (whatever that is ?) ?
Why ?

Thanks,
Bob

BOBRR, You can locate the short cuts to net framework in Admin tools. Control panel-admin tools you should see them there.Click on the general tab for the path. Mine is at C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\ .

You may need to leave both 1.1 and 2.0 installed.

.NET Framework 2.0 is not a replacement of version 1.1 and its subsequent hotfixes.  Programs requiring version 1 will still need it to be installed (e.g., Microsoft SyncToy requires 1.1) and those requiring 2.0 will need 2.0 to be installed, so if you are removing .NET Framework 2.0 make sure you do not have any program relying on it to function, e.g., latest version of Paint.NET or Notebook Hardware Control (NHC).

Leave both entries related to 1.1, as the Hotfix entry is a patch, not the application itself (from what I can tell by looking at my installation).

Hi,

What happens if I have some programs needing 1.1, and some needing 2.0 ?

If both versions are installed in PC, does the program just "pick" what's required ?

How is this "problem" handled ? Can you just leave both installed, or... ?

Thanks,
Bob

That's the way it's supposed to work, although I've found that if your needs require only one version, it's generally best to leave things at that.

I agree.  Don't install what isn't needed.  If applications on your computer require version 1, install 1.1, and if other applications require version 2, install 2.0 - both can co-exist on the same computer; some applications do not need either.  Check each application's system requirements and you won't have to guess.

This is not really a "problem" at all.
