Network / File & Printer sharing not working...

Operating System

Microsoft XP

If you are getting an error, please include the exact text of the message.

\\COMPUTER_NAME is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out fi you have access permission.

The network path was not found.

Description of problem.

Network / File & Printer Sharing was working just fine under the current configuration. Then it stopped working properly after February.

Description of troubleshooting steps:

  1.  I turned off my software firewall (Zone Alarm: ZoneAlarm Security Suite version:5.5.094.000 TrueVector Version:5.5.094.000).
  2.  I followed the Network Troubleshooter (on Network Connections) step by step and it didn't solve the issue. The hardware is working fine. I was able to ping both computers back and forth succesfully.
  3.  Permissions for both users in both computers are set for FULL CONTROL.
  4.  I have Windows Automatic Updates, and it installs updates automatically.

*** I highly suspect that Win Update is the issue with one of the new Security Updates..

Please HELP!

The actual path to the printer and files would be:

\\computername\printer

\\computername\foldername

If you are using XP Home, only the Documents and Settings folder can be shared, nothing else.  Do you have the XP firewall on?

  • The file and printer paths are correct i.e. \\COMPUTER_NAME\FOLDER
  • XP and Zone Alarm Firewall were OFF during the trial.
  • One computer in the network is using XP Professional and the other one is XP Home.
    • They were communicating reliably when I first set up the network at the beginning of the year. Suddenly, file sharing stopped working.
    • Pinging works fine.

I'm highly suspicious of a Windows Security Update causing this issue. If anybody is aware, please let me know ASAP!

Thanks.

There have been numerous updates just this week alone.  I would suggest you delete the share and recreate it.
