New Computer Issues

My friend just received her Dimension 3000.  She installed her printer, scanner, anti-spyware, and some business software and all seemed to work OK.

Next day, WindowsXP would not boot.  I tried to help her get into Safe mode, but it would not boot either.

Of course, she had no Windows restore disk.  Called TechSupport (I missed this call) where they walked her through some process that basically backed out all of her changes.  Software she previously installed was no longer there.  I know they probably used System Restore - but how would they have gotten into the system to begin with?

Is there any documentation (white paper, etc) on the hidden recovery partition, and it's usage?

I planned to haver her burn the recovery CD immediately.

Thanks

The tech probably used the hidden Recovery partition to restore it to "as shipped" condition. However--make sure she ran the utility to make a cd of Windows XP and put it in a safe place to use next time!

The OS Recovery CD Utility, at least on my 8400, does not do anything. I have yet to read any post from a user that actually made a CD via this utility. However I did receive a OS CD with my order which apparently is unusual. Maybe Dell disables the utility if they supply the CD. I did not request one, when I ordered, as that option does not exist. Yet I got one and consider myself lucky.

It might be the low-end machines.  I have a Lattitude, Inspiron, and higher-end Dimensions - all came with the CD.

She bought a Dimension 3000.

If Dell hasn't sent you a backup CD of Windows XP or any other cd which you paid for, call them and ask that they send one.  I just bought a Dimension 3000 and it had not backup cd. I called DELL and told them to send me one. They did. Immediately.
