Jim: Do this.  Open Welcome Center by clicking the Start button  clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Welcome Center.
Not a dumb question. Vist is so much different form XP, we have an all new learning process.

At present, all Vista Dell systems come with the 32 bit OS only.

Respectfully, my Dell E521 came as a 64 bit system.

Yes, David, it is 64 bit capable, but it does not have the 64 bit OS, only 32 bit if that is what you mean with your short reply.....
 
Dell does not offer the 64 bit OS at this time, nor is it pre-installed on any of Dells systems.  Only the 32 bit OS
 
This shows my 64 bit Vista, and is what we are talking about
