new inspiron 15 100% hard disk, windows updates fail
I just brought a new inspiron 15, windows 10, 1tb conventional disk. After leaving it for a while (3 hours) to go through its updates the system is running 100% HDD continuously . Performance is laggy. I noticed that it failed trying to install the latest windows update.
Its completely frustrating that a new out of the box machine is laggy.
Any suggestions ?

Hi there, can you try running Diags on the system? You can use online diags at this link using your Service Tag, I would test the whole system, but at a minimum make sure to test the drive.
Best regards,
Brad

Hi I ran the diag tests all came back OK. Currently my HDD fluctuates sometimes hitting 100% for a short time.
Windows updates continue to fail however.

" After leaving it for a while (3 hours) to go through its updates the system is running 100% HDD continuously "
Three hours is too long.....
When the computer is running too slow or clashing a lot, I suggest using Processes tab in Task Manager to identify which programs are consuming more memory, disk and network in real time. Please watch Dell video below:

If that doesn't fix the windows updates problem, I suggest you run windows update troubleshooting tool on the system. Please type Troubleshooting Control Panel onto the [Cortana] search box, click 'View All' and then Windows Update. You can run the other tool as mark in image below:

In Update & Security, please click on 'Check For Updates' again, and then click on 'Restart Now' instead of waiting for Microsoft to installed later, see image below.

Thanks for the update. Were you able to try any of LSUFAN51's suggestions?
Best,

Not yet- will need to try it tonight.
However, I have noticed that when windows updates are downloading the HDD is 100% and the system comes to a grinding halt. As a workaorund I changed my wifi connection to metered connection which stops windows update from trying to run. It appears something with windows update is corrupted.
By the way I had done a reset of windows before - so this is a fresh install - problems continue the same- so there appears something in the base DELL build casing the problem.

Ok have tried all the fixes ,
ran troubleshooter, it fixed some things,
i ran dism ,
i ran sfc /scannow.
I updated dell BIOS and dell chipset drivers.
Problem persists. WIndows updates continue to fail and when windows update is downloading or running the machine completely slows down.

I wish I would I had seen this post yesterday before I installed the cumulative update on my systems. Some of the last updates I got for 1607 did check all the files on the Worker activity is not unusual although 3 hours is too long. The fact it only downloaded 6% means it is still doing the checking.
I don't remember if the anti-virus got involved in the process. If you have downloaded the updates and running them from offline, you might disable the real time anti-virus during this process.

I'm assuming you turn off the metered connection when troubleshooting the system? Please keep in mind:

Lastly, try the stand-alone package from the Microsoft Update Catalog website to get the failed windows updates to installed. Please type iexplore.exe onto the {Cortana} search box or use Command Prompt(Admin). In windows 11, type April 11, 2017—KB4015217 (OS Build 14393.1066 and 14393.1083) onto the search engine and then choose one of the selection. In the Microsoft page, stroll down to bottom of page and you should see 'How to get this update' , see image below:

Also ....
It appears that "Windows Modules Installer Worker " is causing most of the 100% Disk usage. I'm trying to figure out what is a windows modules installer worker and I can't seem to find any information about it online thus fur.

Thanks for your help LSUFAN51 , turning off windows defender and running stand alone installer still fails.
The installer runs and then says this update was not installed. I dont know if this means it failed or the update was not applicable??

You turn off the system firewall as well ? If no, type Windows Firewall onto [Cortana] search box, and then turn off or right click Windows logo, Control Panel, System Security, Windows Firewall and then turn off, see image below:

By the way, what is your Dell model number ? Ex: Dell Inspiron 3543
If you don't know, type msinfo32 onto search box, and then stroll down to System Model.
