Thanks for all the replies, everyone! I appreciate the help. What I ultimately did was call Dell's customer service line and got a very nice guy named Justin to help. He had me restart in "safe mode" and do a system restore, which worked perfectly. I think there's something about that particular game my son plays (some Paddington CD rom game) b/c after he plays it, there's always something messed up on the desktop.
