no toolbar or folder files

I left my computer on over the weekend.  When I returned, I found that it has shut itself down.  When I turned it on, I received a log in window--I never had to log onto my computer before.  I also noticed that I did not have a toolbar at the bottome of my screen--i.e START button.  My Internet Explorer doesn't have a toolbar either.  I only have back, search and favorites. I opened up WORD and no toolbar either.  MY DOCUMENTS doesn't have any folders.  I only see the name of the folders and the files but no actual folders are displayed.  The icons on my desktop are larger than normal and have a grayish shadow around them--almost like if I was running in safe mode.

I also receive this error message when desktop starts: tfswctrl.exe application error

I'm running Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 8400.  No problems like this before.  Would appreciate any suggestions, advice etc.

tfswctrl.exe is an essential process for HP's packet writing software which burns data to CD's using Microsoft Windows explorer
I think this a different problem from the missing toolbars which need to be fixed first.

You have no Taskbar, Start Button or Start Menu?
Press CTRL + ALT + DEL to bring up Task Manager
Go to File/New Task (Run) and type in
explorer.exe
OK
Hopefully this will bring back these missing items.
1  Try a System Restore

2. Whether System Restore worked or not, you must check your system for malware of all kinds, starting with a virus check.
Run your antivirus and if possible these online scans

See if you can do any of that and post back
