I do not have that in my dell accessories folder.  Is there a link I can download it from?

No, but try rebooting a few times.  If it still isn't there, call Dell for a CD.

Thank you Joanne for the link.  This should save a lot of postings, if people take the time to read first.

I'm like Daniel--I don't have the Dell OS Recovery CD option in my Dell Accessories folder--only a link to open the Dell Resources CD. I have a Dimension 4600 that is about a year old, and I do have a Windows CD with SP1a, but I was hoping to make a CD with SP2, assuming that the application in question uses the current OS (which I have upgraded to SP2 online). Rick says I can ask Dell for a CD, but when I contacted Dell Technical Support, they said they wouldn't give me a CD with SP2.

Download SP2 and slipstream it with your original SP1 disc.  Just google for the term and you will get dozens of hits.

The utility would NOT be on a 1 year old CD.  You have the CD, so you can't ask for another...

JMWILLS suggested that I slipstream SP2 into my Windows XP SP1a files from the CD. I knew about this option but there are two problems. First, the way that Dell wrote the Windows CD prevents slipstreaming, although there is a workaround involving deleting some files from the CD set (which I have done although I am uncertain that the result is exactly what I wanted). Second, when you burn the new CD, you need a boot image file that is not easy to obtain. Most of the sites suggest downloading something called ISOBuster (freeware upgradeable to a supposedly better version at a price) to extract the boot image file from the Windows CD. I am reluctant to do so for two reasons. First, I am wary of freeware that might be spyware or worse. Second, I am worried that Microsoft might consider that action to be piracy, although they do seem to approve of slipstreaming in general.

If anyone has had experience with this procedure, I would appreciate advice.

It would not be appropriate to post that here.

My system crashed. I installed linux on my laptop and removed everything there. Now there is no windows system on my laptop and I just found there is not windows xp CD in the package. How can I get the windows XP cd? Should I call or email Dell to mail me the CD? Should I pay for the CD? I think I bought this laptop with a windows XP Home Edition. Thanks.

Using the Advanced Forum Search on the bottom of this page, you can quite easily find the answer to this often asked question.

Call, email, or chat and you won't have to pay if it's within 21 days from invoice/ship date.

i just followed your instructions to make the recovery CD. When I go to start and then to dell i do not have any OS recovery utility listed, just express tag and driver reset tool. I even ran a computer search to look for the recovery utility but there is none. I just obught the computer in November, it runs windows XP, nothing has been changed now what do I do?

Thank you

It's not a recovery CD, it's a copy of Windows, and a 2004 computer wouldn't have it.  Your Windows XP CD would have come with your computer.

Systems shipped after June 15, 2004 came with Symantec PC Restore. This utility restores the computer to an "as-shipped" condition. If you haven't reformatted, repartitioned, or otherwise modified the master boot record, it should work. Click here for instructions about Symantec PC Restore.

If the Symantec PC Restore utility won't work, but still resides on your computer, a Dell customer has figured out some ways to get it to work again. Note - If you removed this partition, it is not recoverable, cannot be downloaded from the internet, and cannot be shipped from Dell. Click here for ways to fix Symantec PC Restore. Users have also reported that the partition can be restored with Ghost 2003, and Ghost 9 using the '03 capabilities of it. If you boot to the Ghost 9 CD, select Advanced Recovery Taks, select Utilities, then Restore Legacy IMage it should work - but you want to verify the image before attempting the restore. It's in a folder called IMG.

Systems that shipped beginning in early 2005 may ship without Windows XP. There SHOULD be (but sometimes isn't) a utility on your computer to run and create the Windows XP CD. This is a RUN ONCE utility. Click here for instructions to create your Windows XP CD. Some users have reported needing to reboot a few times to get this utility to show up on the menu. You can also call Dell and request a CD and wait for it to ship.

It is VERY confusing to jump into the middle of a thread for amy reason, especially with one liners.  We can presume to know what you mean.  How do you backup data with any sort of removable media?????
