Hi,
I was told to take Go Back off of my computer because it was redundant to system restore on the Windows Xp operating system.  However, My system restore has yet to work. I am needing help with that also.

I use Norton Go Back instead of Win XP's System Restore.  I have NEVER had a problem with Norton's Go Back.  Reserve at least 10% of your hard drive for Norton's Go Back.

Thanks Barbara and Greg for your replies.

I have used Go-Back for a few years now with no problems on any of the computers I have installed it on.

I do know that it works perfectly, when only one partition is involved, I had to remove a system back-up partition on one of the computers I tried to install it on, Go-Back just wouldn't install untill the partition was removed. Once the partition was removed Go-Back installed and worked fine.

I have tried Go-Back on my current system, but I have taken it off again. The reason being, it worked too slow. It was taking about two hours to 'go-back' just a few minuites. It took two hours for it to un-install. Something is wrong, and that is the reason for my post.

Because my computer is new I don't wish to start removing the back-up partitions that Dell have installed, and I was hoping that someone had overcome the same problem I have had.

I do miss the comfort of the security of Go-Back, when it's working, it really is great.

My computer is extremely sluggish when Norton Go Back is installed on Inspiron 9300.  I would use the system restore, but I too have yet to get it to work. (I was told the files were corrupt - this is a brand new computer and I have already done a complete reformat ot the hard drive).   I would like to remove the system restore and use only Norton go back.  Anyone know how to do this?

Hi rosed,

I used Partition Magic to remove the redundant partition on the occasion I needed to install Go-Back. It was easy to follow the instructions given with the software, and Go-Back installed with no problems.
I still haven't installed Go-Back on my system. The reason being, if I have a problem with the computer, Dell, so I have been told, always tell you to restore the system before they will help. I suppose by doing that it eliminates all software problems. I would imagine that most of the problems we encounter with our computers are software related, so it is understandable.
Wish you luck.

Greg,

Did you install Norton Go Back and leave the Windows XP system restore on your computer?  Or did you do something with the partitions?

I take it Partition Magic is a software program that can be purchased at a computer store.  Do I understand you correctly in that the partition magic will remove the system restore and/or system reimage?  Then I can install the Norton Go Back and have only one partion?  I have not had good experiences with Dell in getting assistance from them.  I have been totally dissappointed in their customer service and their product.   Thank you for your response - at least someone out there wants to help.  signed Totally Frustrated

I too have had a problem trying to install Go Back (a GREAT program) on a new Inspiron 9300. After I installed it (version 3.5 from NSW 2004), I got a Blue Screen of Death with the error message DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and I had to restore the  whole drive. It happened again and corrupted the MBR so I had to request a restore disk from Dell. I have NEVER had a problem installing this program on Dell systems before (I've done it over a dozen times). Is it peculiar to the Inspiron 9300? Does it have to do with the diagnostic partition that Dell puts on the hard drive? Does that have to be removed to make the program work? Any answers (especially from Dell) would be greatly appreciated. I cannot conceive of working on my computer (from which I make my living) without Go Back. Help!!!!

What is the MBR?  When you had to completely restore your 9300, I take it you had to call Dell and ask them to send the proper disks.  I did not have all disks I needed either when I had to restore my 9300- in fact I still cannot get them to send me a copy of the Resource disk.  I would love to get rid of Dell's "image" on my hard drive and just use Go Back because when I needed the reimage it did not work as it is supposed to.  According to Dell, all my problems occurred when I installed an Epson RX620 printer.  If Dell had a printer with the same options available as the Epson, I would have purchased a Dell printer.  The only thing I can suggest is to contact Symantec and see if they have record of similar problems.  I've been in contact with Symantec for problems installing Ghost 9.0 which also came with NSW Premier 2005.  I will be calling them myself for the Go Back issues.

MBR  = Master Boot Record.

Yes, I had to get Dell to send me both the restoration CDs (5 of them) and the OS and driver CDs. By the way, Microsoft lists Norton Go Back 3.0 and 3.5 (personal editions) as having known incompatibility with Win XP sp2, but it only seems to not work if you install these programs AFTER installing sp2. If they were installed prior to the sp update, they still work. Go figure. Symantec doesn't seem to acknowledge that there are any problems at all with either program. Will try Go Back 4.0 (full version) and see if that works.

I have tried Norton Go-back 4 Full Version, and I had more problems with it than the previous Go-back versions 3.0 and 3.05, see my first post in this thread.

I have tried to get Norton to reply to any of my requests to them.....Nothing.

I am convinced that a partition of any sort, is not compatable with Go-back. I have only ever got Go Back to work properly when there is no partition on the drive you are protecting.

The choice is either you keep the Dell partition, or delete it and install Go Back.

At the moment I still have not installed Go back. I certainly miss it.

I shall watch any post from you regarding your corresponence with Norton. I wish you luck.

tony,

How would I delete the Dell Partition?  I think it is useless because it did not work for me when I needed it, just like the system restore never seemed to work.

Will let you know what response I get from Norton.

I would use software called 'Partition Magic' it's made by Symantec. I think it's a little pricey, have a look around your local computer shops you may get it cheaper.

It's very easy to use, it walks you through all the steps quite easy, I think you can delete partitions using windows but I have no knowledge or experience of  doing that. I have never had a problem using Partition Magic.

Perhaps someone else could give you instructions on removing partitions using windows, ask in your favourite XP Forum, if that is the route you would like to try.

Wish you well, and will look forward to hearing what Symantec has to say about installing Go back on a computer with partitions

Tony and dfx,  I was told to follow the instructions in the following symantec website.  I just did this last night so I'm not sure if all the issues have been resolved, but I definitely see differences.  (I too had gotten the blue screen when I tried to reinstall GoBack but did not have to do a complete reformat.)  First you remove all traces of previous norton products and then reinstall following the detailed instructions.

Thank you for contacting Symantec's Authorized Service Support Center. Due to the nature of your inquiry, I recommend contacting Symantec's online Technical Support for assistance. Please visit the following Web site to view your technical support options:

http://service.symantec.com

At this location, please select type of user (consumer or enterprise), select your product, version number and then click "Go". The next page (stage one) will list a number of options specific to your product version.

Be sure to select options for both "I need help with" and "and I want".

Please pick the closest topics to the technical issue or problem you want resolved.

Should you need to post a message to a technician via Symantec's Service and Support Web site, please read these suggestions:

1. Be sure to select the appropriate product name and version, and operating system of your computer 2. Write clearly and precisely, including as much detail as possible about the specific issue or problem 3. Sometimes technical problems are related, but please limit each posting to one problem. It is easier for the technician to address one issue at a time, and reply to each issue adequately 4. Bookmark the Web site where you message is posted. Your response will be posted there. Bookmarking makes it easier for you to return to find your answer.

Hope this helps - did symantec already tell one of you to do this?  Let me know if you have any further questions and if this solves your problems.

dfx,  If Dell sent you the Resource CD that should be included with the 9300, can you make me a copy of it and send it to me.  I cannot get Dell to send it to me.  They keep telling me I need to pay to go to the HELP desk for assistance with this.  Remember, I too had to ask Dell to send me all the "restore" cd's for the Inspiron 9300 in order for me to reformat my hard drive.
