Not running or uninstalling Dell startup programs
My Dell Dimension 4600 system contains a number of programs that run at start up,
including MaAfree security center, Dell Support Alerts, and a "Stay Current with Automatic Updates" reminder. None of these programs are in the StartUp menu.
I would rather not have these programs running when I start up the system.
Is there any way to disable these programs at startup, or, if that isn't
possible, to completly uninstall them?
Sincerely,
Greg Gritton

You could run msconfig from the start menu (type in "msconfig" without the " "in the Run box, click on "startup" and uncheck the programs you wish not to launch at startup. When you reboot, you will get the message that you're using Selective Startup. Simply check the "Don't show me this message again" box and click ok.

For the Alerts go to Start|Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Dell Support (you won't miss it). For the Updates go to Start|Control Panel|System|Automatic Updates tab and uncheck "Keep my computer up to date." (Remember to check the Windows Update site periodically for Critical Updates after doing this, of course.)
I don't have McAfee on my system so I don't know how to stop it from automatically starting but it should be listed in msconfig as lydthekid indicated and may also have an option to disable it on startup in the program itself under Preferences or Options.

GregGritton,
If you are using the McAfee firewall or anti-virus, I would reccommend allowing the security center to run at system startup.

I use a different firewall and anti-virus program and would love to get this damned McAfee securitycenter removed, so far I haev not been able to find a way to do so. Anyone know how to get it off my system?
Thanks in advance!

Go here. Enter McAfee Internet Security 5 in the Product box. A new window will open on which you should enter Install/Uninstall. A third window will open with a link to a document that provides instructions for automatic and manual removal.
