notebook software

I am a new notebook owner(8600) and was wondering if there was any type of software available to  "synch"(for lack of a better term) selective contents between my notebook and desktop.

Thanks for the info

You didn't say if you have a network or able to connect the computers direct. You can use the briefcase to move files between connected computers. You also can transfer files if you are networked, and by using CD, all within windows XP. Just go to start, help and support center, click on working remotely, then click on synchronizing files with the Synchronization Manager or synchronizing files with Briefcase. You should find the answers on how to transfer files here.

Augie,

Thanks for the info.

My configuration is as follows:

Netgear wireless router networked to:

        8600 notebook

Desktop that is not wireless and hardwired into above router

So you can see my notebook is a wireless network and my desktop is a hardwired network....so to speak.    I am not an expert at networking, but I presume I need to network wirelessly both my notebook and desktop.   I guess I could install a wireless network card in my desktop but I hate to go to all that trouble when I am so easily hardwired to my router.   Is there some device that I can "plug" (USB??)into my desktop  to network with my notebook, while I am hard wired to my router, then when I am done, "unplug" it from my desktop.    I guess this is more of a networking issue that I am struggling with.

I didn't realize the "briefcase" was still around with XP.

I don't really know anything about the synchronizing function, but I will read up on it.  Will it do the following:

If I have the same word document in my desktop, notebook, and briefcase.   I make changes to the document in my notebook, will those changes be made to the original document in the briefcase and desktop?

How about synching changes in e-mails, favorites, and address book?

Thanks for all the suggestions, I really appreciate your help.

I can not answer all your questions, but I can/will answer one.  As I understand it your have a router with the desktop wired to it, and a laptop using a wireless connection to the same router.  If this is true thenboth PCs are on the same network, they are networked.  That is exactly how my home network is configured except I have two wired PCs and one laptop.  All three of my PC can talk to each other and share files.  I have never used the briefcase so I can not help you there.

msgale,

Thanks for the info.  I guess I was "networked" and didn't realize it.

Now if I can just figure out the synching, briefcase, file sharing issue....

Karen's Replicator very easily does exactly most of what you seem to want to do.
